Rockstar has not published the GTA 6 map size, so every "twice as big as GTA 5" line you read is an estimate, and some of them contradict each other. What you can compare with real sources is everything around the map: release dates, platforms, the number of playable heroes, the setting, the price and what each game offers at launch. Below are the size claims with the name of whoever made them, then a side-by-side table with a source for every row.

None of the figures below comes from a Rockstar post, trailer or the official site. They come from press articles that relay someone else's words, or from fans measuring trailer footage.

Look at the two Game Rant lines together. Twice GTA 5 gives about 62 square miles; three times RDR2 gives about 87. Both cannot be exact. Game Rant itself says the developers may have been speaking "more by their gut". The CBR headline calls 2.5 times "official", but the article body credits community mapping, not Rockstar.
There is a good reason to wait. Area depends on what you count: open water, mountains you cannot climb, interiors. When Rockstar or the finished game gives a number, this table will get a new top row. Until then, our GTA 6 map guide lists the six regions Rockstar has actually named.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5: the comparison table
Every GTA 6 cell comes from Rockstar or Take-Two; GTA 5 cells come from Steam and Wikipedia's release history. Where a cell says "not announced", we checked and found nothing official.

Two rows need a note. The GTA 5 first-person view arrived with the PS4 and Xbox One versions on November 18, 2014, not in 2013. And the GTA 6 radio count is a floor, not a total: Rockstar showed six stations on October 8, 2026 and says more are coming.
Protagonists: two vs three
GTA 5 split its story across three men: retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street gangster Franklin Clinton and drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips.
GTA 6 goes down to two, and the pair is the point. Rockstar's synopsis says Jason and Lucia are "forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive". Who the two are and who surrounds them is in our GTA 6 characters guide.
Price and platforms at launch
GTA 6 costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the US, per Take-Two's pre-order announcement of June 24, 2026. What the extra $20 buys is laid out item by item in our GTA 6 editions compared page, and where to order is in the pre-order guide.
On platforms the pattern repeats. GTA 5 launched on two consoles of its time and reached PC about 19 months later. GTA 6 launches on two consoles too, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version or date. We track that question in GTA 6 on PC.

What GTA 6 adds, by Rockstar's account
These are features Rockstar has described for GTA 6. We do not claim GTA 5 lacked each one unless Rockstar says so.
- Podcasts. Rockstar says GTA 6 is the first game in the series with on-demand podcasts.
- Radio on foot. Stations and podcasts play through earbuds linked to the character's phone, not only in cars.
- Weather and wildlife. Rockstar told Game Informer about local showers, tropical storms, seasonal hurricanes and more than 170 animal species; details and sources are in our GTA 6 map guide.
- Two linked heroes instead of three separate ones.

What usually goes wrong
A square-kilometre figure with no source. Pages print "GTA 6 map is X km²" as if Rockstar said it. Ask who measured it and from what. If the answer is fan mapping or a relayed quote, it is an estimate.
GTA 5 from 2013 mixed up with GTA 5 Enhanced from 2025. Comparisons sometimes set GTA 6 against the PS3 version, sometimes against the 2025 PC build with ray tracing. Check which one a chart uses before you trust its graphics row.
Comparisons built on leaks. Unauthorised footage from an unfinished build has circulated. Rockstar has not confirmed anything in it, so a "map leak vs GTA 5" overlay compares GTA 5 with a guess.
Online counted as a launch feature. GTA Online came two weeks after GTA 5. For GTA 6, Rockstar calls the game "a single player experience" and has not announced an online mode or its timing.

Rockstar has not published a number. The most quoted claim, 'twice the overall size of GTA 5', comes from Rockstar staff speaking to a YouTuber, as relayed by Game Rant. Fan mapping puts it near 2.5 times. Neither is official.
Is the GTA 6 map twice the size of GTA 5?
Possibly, but nobody can prove it yet. 'Twice' is a second-hand quote, and the same relay contains a comparison with RDR2 that works out to a different area. Wait for the game or an official statement.
How many protagonists does GTA 6 have?
Two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. GTA 5 had three: Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
Is GTA 6 more expensive than GTA 5 was?

Will GTA 6 have more radio stations than GTA 5?
Unknown so far. Rockstar has shown six GTA 6 stations and promises 'the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet'. GTA 5 had fifteen music stations and two talk stations.
Is GTA 6 bigger than RDR2?
According to the same relayed Rockstar comment, GTA 6 is 'three times the overall size' of RDR2's map. Rockstar has not published this itself, so treat it as an estimate.
