GTA V Enhanced vs Legacy comes down to hardware. Enhanced is the 2025 PC version with ray tracing, DLSS and FSR, DirectStorage and the newer GTA Online features; it needs an SSD, 105 GB and at least a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB. Legacy is the original 2015 PC release that still runs on a 1 GB graphics card and 4 GB of RAM. Owners of GTA V on PC get both versions for free.
Check your GPU memory and your drive type first. Those two numbers decide most of this choice.

What Enhanced adds over Legacy
Rockstar released Enhanced on March 4, 2025, almost three years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version came out on March 15, 2022. The Newswire post describes it as bringing those console features to PC and optimising the game for modern hardware.

Two items need context. Ray traced ambient occlusion and global illumination are PC-only and need the recommended specs, per Rockstar. And in March 2025 Rockstar said frame generation for DLSS and FSR was "planned for both at a future date". For NVIDIA it arrived on August 12, 2025: DLSS Frame Generation for RTX 40 and 50 cards, and Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 only. We have not checked FSR frame generation, so look in your own graphics menu.
The Career Builder gives new GTA Online players a GTA$4,000,000 start and a choice of four paths: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker. That alone is a reason to start a new character on Enhanced.

The VRAM line matters more than the GPU model. A card with 2 GB or 3 GB sits under the minimum even if it was faster than a GTX 1630 in its day.

Legacy asks for more disk space than Enhanced: 125 GB against 105 GB. Those are Steam's figures for each version, so plan your drive around them.
Which one should you install?
Go by the hardware, not by the name.
Install Legacy if your GPU has less than 4 GB of memory, you have less than 8 GB of RAM, or the game would sit on a hard disk. Rockstar kept Legacy for exactly this case: the March 2025 post says access continues "so anyone whose hardware does not currently meet the minimum requirements of the new upgrade can keep playing".
Try Enhanced first if you clear the minimum, even barely. Reports from r/GTAV split here. In a February 2026 thread a player with a 6-core i3 laptop, integrated graphics and an NVMe SSD tested Enhanced and found it "a lot smoother" than Legacy. In a December 2025 thread a GTX 1070 owner with a 4-core, 4-thread i5 saw the CPU maxed and the GPU barely working in Enhanced; replies pointed to a CPU bottleneck rather than a bug.
So the practical rule: a slow CPU with few threads is the weak spot for Enhanced, and a fast SSD is its strength. If you have both versions, test the same short drive through the city in each and keep the one with fewer dips. Our GTA 5 FPS boost guide has the settings to change first in either version.
If you also play on a wide monitor, Enhanced added better support for higher aspect ratios. The FOV calculator converts field of view between 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9, which helps you set a comparable view.
Is Enhanced a free upgrade?
Yes, for anyone who already owns GTA V on PC. Rockstar's March 4, 2025 announcement says owners "can upgrade to this new version for free, with the ability to migrate your Story Mode and Online progress". New buyers get both versions together. On Steam, Enhanced has its own store page; on October 11, 2026 it was on sale in Kazakhstan for 9,899 tenge, 56% off the regular 22,499. We did not check prices in other regions.
From April 15, 2025 Enhanced is also on the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass, per Rockstar.
What usually goes wrong
Enhanced on a hard disk. Symptom: very long loads and freezes while driving. Cause: SSD Required is part of the minimum spec. Fix: move the game to an SSD or switch to Legacy.
The drive runs out mid-download. Symptom: the download stops near the end. Cause: 105 GB for Enhanced or 125 GB for Legacy, before updates. Fix: free the space first; our slow Steam download guide covers the rest of the download problems.
Friends cannot join your session. Symptom: invites never arrive. Cause: Rockstar keeps Legacy and Enhanced players apart in GTA Online. Fix: everyone switches to the same version.
GTA+ bought, nothing in the game. Symptom: no monthly GTA$ or perks. Cause: you are playing Legacy; GTA+ on PC works only with Enhanced. Fix: launch Enhanced and migrate your character.
Legacy is "gone" from Steam. Symptom: search shows only Enhanced. Cause: the Legacy page is unlisted at the publisher's request. Fix: Rockstar says access to Legacy continues; it appears as GTAV Legacy in the Rockstar Games Launcher, and its Steam page still opens by direct link. If files break after switching, run verify game files on that version.

What is the difference between GTA V Enhanced and Legacy?
Enhanced is the 2025 PC version with the PS5 and Xbox Series features: ray tracing, DLSS and FSR, DirectStorage loading, Hao's Special Works and the Career Builder in GTA Online, and GTA+. Legacy is the original 2015 PC version with lower requirements. Players on the two versions cannot play GTA Online together.
Can GTA V Enhanced run on an HDD?
Not officially. Steam lists SSD Required in the minimum specs for Enhanced. If your only drive is a hard disk, install Legacy, which has no SSD requirement.
