The biggest GTA 5 FPS boost on a weak PC comes from four settings: Grass Quality, Extended Distance Scaling, MSAA and, in Enhanced, ray tracing. NVIDIA's per-setting tests found grass the single heaviest option in the countryside and extended distance scaling able to "crush" performance. Population Density, Post FX and shadows come next. Then make sure you run the right version, because Enhanced needs an SSD and a 4 GB graphics card before any setting matters.
Start with Grass Quality on High and Extended Distance Scaling at zero, then run the built-in benchmark two or three times to get a baseline.

Short answer
- Turn Extended Distance Scaling to zero and Grass Quality to High; drop grass to Normal only if you still lack frames, since Normal strips almost all foliage.
- Switch MSAA off and use FXAA. Reflection MSAA off on any system.
- In Enhanced: ray tracing off, DLSS or FSR on. Below the Enhanced minimum, play Legacy instead.
- Keep Ignore Suggested Limits off. Going past your VRAM brings stutter and crashes, per NVIDIA.
- Measure with the built-in benchmark or the same route, and judge by the dips, not the average.
Settings table for a low-end PC
NVIDIA tested every option of the original PC version (today's Legacy) in April 2015. The cost column summarises its findings, plus Rockstar's notes for the two Enhanced-only rows; the value column is our starting point for a weak PC.
| Setting | Low-end value | What you lose | Cost (source) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray tracing (Enhanced only) | Off | RT shadows, reflections, AO, GI | Rockstar: PC-only RT needs recommended specs |
| DLSS / FSR (Enhanced only) | On, quality preset first | some sharpness | Rockstar lists DLSS and FSR support |
| Extended Distance Scaling | 0 | far detail | largest combined impact; "will crush your performance" |
| Grass Quality | High (Normal if desperate) | dense foliage | largest single impact in rural areas |
| Distance Scaling | lower until stable | pop-in at range | varies wildly by location |
| MSAA | Off, FXAA on | edge smoothness | considerable, plus 1,211 MB VRAM at 8x |
| Reflection MSAA | Off | nothing visible | negligible quality gain |
| Shadow Quality | High, Soft Shadows "Soft" | shadow detail | moderate, heavy on VRAM |
| High Resolution Shadows | Off | sharp shadows | relatively large, worse in grass |
| Population Density | 75% or lower | crowds, traffic | doubles or triples in real play vs benchmark |
| Long Shadows | Off | dusk shadow accuracy | about 3 FPS |
| High Detail Streaming While Flying | Off | detail from the air | a little over 4 FPS in the benchmark |
Two traps in this list. Post FX is not in the table because NVIDIA could not reproduce the up to 10 FPS that some players gained from lowering it from Ultra to Very High; test it on your machine. And Texture Quality barely changes FPS at all: NVIDIA measured "nearly identical" performance on every level. It only matters for video memory, which is the next section.
Enhanced or Legacy for weak hardware?
The minimum specs decide the first half. Enhanced needs Windows 10, an i7-4770 or FX-9590, 8 GB of RAM, a 4 GB GTX 1630 or RX 6400 and an SSD. Legacy runs from a Core 2 Quad, 4 GB of RAM and a 1 GB card. Miss any Enhanced line and Legacy is the version to tune.
Above the minimum, players disagree. A February 2026 r/GTAV thread has a laptop with integrated Intel graphics and an NVMe SSD running Enhanced "a lot smoother" than Legacy. A December 2025 thread shows the opposite failure: a GTX 1070 paired with a 4-core, 4-thread i5, the CPU pinned at 100% and the GPU fans barely spinning. Replies called it a CPU bottleneck. The full side-by-side, with both requirement tables, is in GTA V Enhanced vs Legacy.
Fixing stutter: SSD, VRAM and the benchmark
Low average FPS and stutter are different problems. Stutter usually comes from one of three places.
Video memory. The graphics menu shows a VRAM bar. By NVIDIA's count, the lowest settings at 1920×1080 already take 1,066 MB, the best textures add 1,335 MB and 8x MSAA another 1,211 MB. On a 2 GB card, set Texture Quality to fit the bar and lower Population Variety, which costs VRAM but, per NVIDIA, no FPS.
The drive. Enhanced lists "SSD Required", and Rockstar sells its faster loading on SSD and DirectStorage. Running it from a hard disk means playing below the minimum spec. Legacy has no SSD requirement.
The CPU. If one core sits at 100% and the GPU is half idle, lowering graphics will not help. Lower Population Density and Distance Scaling instead: both add cars and people the CPU has to simulate.
Measure before and after each change. The built-in benchmark runs four scenes, but NVIDIA saw ±5 FPS between identical passes, so run it two or three times. NVIDIA's guide also lists commandline.txt switches for the original version, such as -benchmark to start the test directly and -benchmarkFrameTimes to log frame times. We could not open Rockstar's own parameter list, so treat these as Legacy-era notes, not as an official 2026 reference. Our CS2 launch options guide uses the same one-change-at-a-time method in more detail.
What does not help
DirectX 10 or 10.1 in Legacy. They exist for old GPUs. NVIDIA found DirectX 11 faster.
Lowering Texture Quality or Population Variety for FPS. Both cost VRAM, not frames. Lower them only when the VRAM bar is over the limit.
Frame generation on a very weak PC. In a March 2026 r/GTAV thread about a GT 720M laptop, one reply put it bluntly: generated frames are not real frames, and at low, uneven frame rates they bring more delay and artifacts. NVIDIA added DLSS Frame Generation for RTX 40 and 50 cards on August 12, 2025, so a GT 720M-class laptop doesn't get it; we have not checked FSR frame generation.
"Optimizer" programs and registry packs. None of our sources measured them in GTA V. If a tool promises a fixed FPS gain without saying on which hardware, skip it.
Frame rate is only part of the delay; our reaction time test measures your own reaction and explains what the monitor and mouse add.
What usually goes wrong
Ignore Suggested Limits switched on. Symptom: pauses of a second or more, then crashes. Cause: settings exceed your VRAM, and NVIDIA warns this brings stutter, pauses and crashes. Fix: switch it off and fit the settings to the bar.
Enhanced installed on a hard disk. Symptom: long loads and hitching on fast drives. Cause: SSD is in the minimum spec. Fix: move the game to an SSD or play Legacy.
Overlays stacking up. Symptom: FPS in play lower than in a clean benchmark run. Cause: recorders and overlays take their own share of GPU and CPU time. Fix: close the ones you do not need and compare again; if the game will not start at all, our game crashes on startup guide goes step by step.
Settings judged by one run. Symptom: a change "gained" 8 FPS that then disappears. Cause: the game world is random, and identical benchmark passes differ by about 5 FPS. Fix: repeat each run and compare the lows.
Wrong field of view after a monitor change. Symptom: the picture feels zoomed in on an ultrawide. Cause: aspect ratio changes the horizontal view. Fix: the FOV calculator converts between 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9.

FAQ
Which GTA 5 settings give the most FPS?
Grass Quality and Extended Distance Scaling, by NVIDIA's per-setting tests. Grass has the largest impact of any setting in rural areas, and Extended Distance Scaling compounds every other load. After those come MSAA, Population Density, Post FX and Distance Scaling. In Enhanced, ray tracing comes first.
Is GTA 5 Legacy faster than Enhanced on a weak PC?
It depends on the weak part. Below the Enhanced minimum (4 GB GPU, 8 GB RAM, SSD) Legacy is the only real option. Above it, reports differ: a laptop with an NVMe SSD ran Enhanced smoother, while a 4-core, 4-thread CPU became the bottleneck in Enhanced. Test both on the same route.
What makes GTA 5 stutter on my PC?
The usual causes are running out of video memory (often after switching on Ignore Suggested Limits), a hard disk instead of an SSD, a CPU at 100% while the GPU idles, and overlays. Check the VRAM bar in the graphics menu first.
Does GTA 5 need an SSD?
Enhanced does: Steam lists SSD Required in its minimum specs. Legacy has no SSD requirement, but an SSD still shortens loading and texture streaming.
Do launch parameters increase FPS in GTA 5?
Not by themselves. NVIDIA's 2015 guide lists commandline.txt switches for the original PC version: -benchmark runs the built-in test, and -pedLodBias and -vehicleLodBias fine-tune crowd and traffic. Only the last two change load. We could not open Rockstar's own parameter list, so we do not vouch for any switch in Enhanced.
Is 4 GB of RAM enough for GTA 5?
Only for Legacy, where 4 GB is the official minimum. Enhanced needs 8 GB at minimum and recommends 16 GB.
