GTA 5 cheats work only in the single-player story of Grand Theft Auto V. On PC you open a cheat box with the ~ key and type a code; on PlayStation and Xbox the cheats exist too, and Rockstar's support article covers what they do to saves and trophies on every platform. GTA Online has no cheat box, and Rockstar treats tampering there as a bannable offence. This page sticks to what Rockstar itself has published, so start with the keyboard tester if your ~ key does nothing.

PC: press ~ to open the cheat box and type the word. Consoles: enter the button sequence quickly while playing, not in a menu. Phone: dial the number in the in-game phone on any platform. Every code is for story mode only; a money cheat does not exist and never did.

Codes switch off after a reload, and some (invincibility, slow motion) run on a timer or cycle through levels when you repeat them. The phone numbers spell the PC words on a keypad, which is the easiest way to remember them.

How do you enter GTA 5 cheats on each platform?

Rockstar described the PC method in its 2015 controls guide: the ~ key opens a text box where you type the code. Here is what the official sources confirm per platform.

The PC detail that trips people up is the keyboard layout. Rockstar's own note: on non-US keyboards the key is usually the one left of 1, and some layouts need Shift pressed together with it. If nothing opens, test the key in our keyboard tester before blaming the game. A dead or remapped key is a five-second check.

On consoles, the support article mentions "rebooting the console" as a way to clear cheats, which confirms they work there. How they are typed in is not on any Rockstar page we could open, and we are not going to guess.

Before the first code, a 30-second routine saves trouble later:

  1. Make a clean save: use a separate slot you never load with cheats on. It is your way back to trophies.
  2. Stay off missions: off-mission cheats switch off when a mission starts, so type them in free roam.
  3. Note what you turned on: a second entry of the same code is the usual off switch, so you need to remember which one you typed.
  4. On PC, find your key: the ~ key moves around on non-US layouts. Find it once, and you won't hunt for it again mid-chase.

What happens to saves and trophies with cheats on?

Rockstar answers this directly in its support article, last updated April 28, 2024.

  • Saving: allowed while cheat codes are enabled.
  • Achievements and trophies: temporarily disabled while cheats are on.
  • Turning a cheat off: enter the same code a second time. Rockstar says this works "usually, but not always".
  • Hard reset: reloading a save or rebooting the console resets all cheats and puts the game back the way it was.

So the safe routine for trophy hunters is boring but reliable. Save normally, play with cheats, then load that clean save before you go after an achievement. Don't rely on typing the code twice; Rockstar itself says it doesn't always switch the effect off.

Where is the official GTA 5 cheat code list?

We looked for one on Rockstar's own sites on October 11, 2026: the Newswire, the GTA V section of Rockstar Support and the Rockstar manuals page. The result:

  1. Rockstar Support has an article about how cheats behave, not a list of codes.
  2. The 2015 PC guide names the cheat box and the kinds of codes (vehicles, invincibility and others), but no code strings.
  3. The manuals page sends GTA V owners to "Grand Theft Auto V: The Manual", a phone app for iOS and Android, not a web page.

Lists on gaming sites are compiled by their editors, and Rockstar does not vouch for them. Our rule for this wave of GTA pages is to print codes only from a Rockstar page we opened ourselves, so this page has no code table. If Rockstar posts one, we will add it with the link.

A quick sanity test for any list you find elsewhere: real GTA 5 cheats are typed inside the game. A site that wants you to download a "cheat tool", sign in with your Rockstar account or pay for codes is not offering cheats.

Is there a GTA 5 money cheat?

No, not one Rockstar has published. None of the Rockstar pages above mention a cheat that adds money, in story mode or online.

GTA Online is stricter. In a May 2015 Q&A, Rockstar said it does not support or condone videos that teach people to cheat their way to "illegitimate RP, counterfeit GTA$" or duplicated vehicles, and that such videos may be flagged for takedown. In other words, every "unlimited money" trick for Online sits on the wrong side of Rockstar's rules.

The legitimate early money in Online is slower but safe. Rockstar's starter tips list a free Lucky Wheel spin once a day at The Diamond Casino, Time Trials that pay GTA$100,000 for beating Par Time once a week, VIP work and weekly 2X or 3X bonuses. How do you lose the wanted level fast?

In GTA Online the official answer is a phone call. Rockstar's Freemode guide says Lester Crest can remove your Wanted Level or take you Off the Radar, and the 2021 starter tips add that he charges a fee for it. If you would rather escape on your own, Rockstar suggests the tunnels around Los Santos.

For story mode, Rockstar's pages we opened don't name a specific wanted-level code. Driving out of the search area or hiding still works the old-fashioned way, and a reloaded save clears any cheat you had running.

Do GTA 5 cheats work in GTA Online?

No. Rockstar's GTA Online guides (Freemode Basics and the starter tips) never mention a cheat box, and the 2015 PC tip about the ~ key is about the game in general, not Online sessions.

The policy is clear. In a June 2015 Newswire post Rockstar wrote that "any attempt to tamper with the behavior of GTA Online" by installing or running mods, scripts or exploits, or by modifying game files, will result in disciplinary action, "including but not limited to time in the cheater pool, bans and potential suspension of your account". We don't link to or describe such tools.

What usually goes wrong

  • "Cheat Denied: Cannot activate that cheat right now." Some cheats are blocked in certain parts of the game. Rockstar's fix is simply to try again later, outside that section.
  • The cheat vanished when a mission started. Starting a mission with off-mission cheats enabled disables them. Re-enter the code after the mission if the game allows it.
  • The ~ key opens nothing. Non-US keyboards often need the ¬ key or Shift. Check the key in the keyboard tester, and check that no overlay app grabs it first.
  • A trophy didn't pop. Achievements are off while cheats are active. Reload a save made without cheats, then repeat the task.
  • Typed the code twice and it is still on. Rockstar says the second entry works "usually, but not always". Reload the save or reboot instead.
