A good GTA Online beginner run starts with the tutorial, which gives you a car, cash and several ranks, then three habits: bank your money, buy a garage, learn the Interaction Menu. Play the first hours in a private or invite-only session instead of a public lobby. Hosting the Original Heists takes rank 12 and a High-End or Custom Apartment; below that you can join another player's heist. VIP work needs no property at all. Everything below follows Rockstar's own guides, with the dates they were published.
Rockstar's main starter list dates from January 2021. The menus and tips still match the game, but prices and payouts change with updates and weekly sales, so treat any GTA$ figure as "check in game".

Short answer
- Finish the tutorial, then open your iFruit phone: up on the D-pad, or T / Backspace on PC.
- Deposit cash in Maze Bank after every job. You drop part of what you carry when you die.
- Open the Interaction Menu (M on PC, hold the touch pad on PlayStation, hold View on Xbox) for armor, snacks and Passive Mode.
- Daily: spin the Lucky Wheel at The Diamond Casino once for free. Weekly: beat a Time Trial's Par Time for GTA$100,000.
- Heists: rank 12 and a High-End or Custom Apartment to host; joining another player's heist needs neither.
How do you start GTA Online? The first hour
Rockstar's guides boil the first hour down to a handful of steps. In order:
- Play the tutorial to the end. It hands you a personal vehicle, earns cash and ranks you up several times before Freemode.
- Learn the phone. Your iFruit accepts jobs and invites. Quick Join drops you into a public playlist of modes or races when you want fast GTA$.
- Open the internet on the phone. That is where you buy vehicles and properties and deposit money into Maze Bank.
- Link your Rockstar account (the former Social Club) to your profile. Rockstar's 2021 tips say this gives a free vehicle and weapon.
- Buy a garage when you can afford one, then call the Mechanic from the phone to bring your personal vehicle.
- Set a spawn point in the Interaction Menu so new sessions start at your property, not across the map.
The money split is worth knowing early: GTA$ buys things, RP raises your rank and opens new upgrades and items. They grow from the same activities, but you spend only one of them.
What do you need for heists and careers?
Rockstar's guides tie most big activities to a property rather than a rank. The only rank requirement they spell out is 12, for hosting the Original Heists.
The rank alone is not enough: hosting also takes a High-End or Custom Apartment, while joining another player's heist needs neither. Later heists need other properties, and our GTA Online heists guide lists each one with its requirements and official page.
| Activity | What you need (per Rockstar) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| VIP work | Register through SecuroServ in the Interaction Menu | VIP status lasts 4 hours, then a cooldown |
| CEO work | Executive Office from Dynasty 8 Executive | Opens Special Cargo and Vehicle Cargo |
| MC President | Motorcycle Clubhouse | Recruit up to seven players |
| Robbery Contracts | Auto Shop | Solo or with up to three other players |
Prices are left out on purpose. Rockstar's guides don't list them, and discounts rotate every week on the Newswire.
How do you stay alive as a new player?
GTA Online sessions hold up to 30 players, and Rockstar itself admits that "nobody likes a griefer". Its advice for newcomers, in plain terms:
- Passive Mode: enable it in the Interaction Menu. Players can't attack you, but you can't attack them or use weaponized vehicles either.
- Private sessions: choosing Online from the boot menu drops you into a public session. Load Story Mode first and use Pause > Online to find private lobby options.
- Armor and snacks: buy Body Armor at Ammu-Nation and equip it from Inventory; snacks from convenience stores restore health mid-fight.
- Starter guns: Rockstar names the Micro SMG, which fires from a car, and the Special Carbine for fights on foot.
- Wanted level: call Lester to remove it for a fee, or lose the police in the tunnels around Los Santos.
Rockstar also notes that the armored Nightshark from Warstock Cache & Carry is a community favorite. That is a later purchase, but a good target once your first business pays.
How do you make money without grinding yourself sick?
Mix short, reliable activities instead of repeating one job for hours. The official list:
- Lucky Wheel: one free spin per day at The Diamond Casino. Prizes include vehicles, GTA$, RP and clothing.
- Time Trials: GTA$100,000 for beating Par Time. Each trial can be done once a week before it rotates.
- VIP missions: register as VIP, recruit friends, and play for up to four hours before the cooldown.
- Weekly bonuses: selected jobs pay 2X or 3X GTA$ and RP for a week. Series icons on the map often pay 2X to 3X.
- Contact Missions: Pause > Online > Jobs > Rockstar Created > Missions lists them on demand.
This month (October 2026). Rockstar's GTA Online page lists a Halloween event: 2X GTA$ and RP on Bail Office targets and Dispatch Work all October, 3X on Halloween Survivals and Slasher modes, and weekly challenges worth GTA$100,000 to GTA$250,000. Completing all five weekly challenges adds a GTA$2,000,000 bonus. October 8 to 14, the challenge is winning two Adversary modes.
Need a squad for VIP work and can't decide who leads? Split friends fairly with the random team generator, or let the spin the wheel tool pick tonight's activity.
Which business should you buy first?
Rockstar describes every business but doesn't rank them. Here is what each one needs and how it earns, from the 2021 tips and the current Properties guide.
| Business | Property | How it earns |
|---|---|---|
| Special Cargo | Office + Special Cargo Warehouse | Buy missions, then sell; bigger loads pay better |
| Vehicle Cargo (Import/Export) | Office + Vehicle Warehouse, up to 40 cars | Steal, store, deliver; damage cuts the price |
| Biker businesses | Clubhouse + business property | Produce product, then run sell missions |
| Air Freight | Hangar | Source cargo by air and sell it |
| Nightclub | Nightclub | Passive income kept up by popularity |
| Gunrunning | Bunker | Supplies to weapons, plus Mobile Operations Center |
Our reading of the official text: start with VIP work, which costs nothing. Then pick between an Office, which opens two cargo businesses at once, and a Nightclub, which Rockstar calls "a great way to earn GTA$ passively". The Terrorbyte truck bought with a Nightclub manages several businesses from one place. Bigger warehouses carry a catch: Rockstar warns that more cargo raises the odds of a raid.
Is GTA Online free in 2026?
Not as a permanent offer. Rockstar's support page describes a free trial: from November 11 to 17, 2025, GTA Online Standalone was free on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, without PlayStation Plus or Game Pass. After the trial you buy GTA Online Standalone on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, and the subscription requirement returns.
There is a second route. Rockstar added GTA Online to the GTA+ games library on November 6, 2025. GTA+ also pays GTA$500,000 each billing period and works on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and on PC with GTAV Enhanced. Rockstar's page doesn't show one price; it depends on the store.
Any site promising a free GTA Online download outside these official offers is not one to trust with your PC or your Rockstar login.
What usually goes wrong
- Money gone after a death. Cash in your pocket is partly dropped when you die. Deposit after every job through an ATM or Maze Bank on your phone.
- Rank 1 in a full public lobby. Higher-ranked players with armored vehicles will find you. Start from Story Mode and choose a private session, or switch on Passive Mode.
- VIP status ran out mid-mission. VIP lasts four hours, then there is a cooldown. An Office lets you register as CEO with no time limit.
- Raided warehouse. A full Special Cargo warehouse is a bigger target. Sell when it is full, and bring a friend or two for defense.
- Friends can't join on PC. Enhanced and Legacy players are in separate GTA Online sessions. Our Enhanced vs Legacy guide explains the split; launch errors are covered in Rockstar Games Launcher fixes.
GTA Online is not winding down with GTA 6 on the way: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in August 2026 that the company expects to keep supporting it. What GTA VI's own online mode looks like is still unannounced; we track that on the GTA 6 online page and the GTA 6 hub. Waiting for a session to load? Try the GTA trivia quiz.
