GTA 6 gameplay has been shown officially in three places: the "An Extended Look" video from August 27, 2026, which Rockstar says was "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5", Game Informer's September 29 cover story, and interviews with Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North. Footage from an unfinished build has also leaked; Rockstar has not confirmed any of it, and this page leaves it out. Below, every mechanic is listed with its source and a status: confirmed by Rockstar, or reported by the press. Our GTA 6 countdown shows the time left in your own time zone.

Short answer

  • Two playable heroes, Jason and Lucia, in a single-player game at launch.
  • Third-person by design; first-person only when aiming some weapons, per Nelson. Not a Rockstar post.
  • Police remember your clothes; a crime only counts if someone sees it or an alarm sounds (reported).
  • Car theft takes tools: a key cloner or slim-jim, plus a phone scanner (reported).
  • Weather with hurricanes and over 170 animal species, confirmed by Rockstar through Game Informer.

Confirmed mechanics, one table

"Confirmed" means Rockstar said it itself, on its site, in Newswire or in an interview Game Informer published as Rockstar's own information. "Reported" means a press recap of a developer interview, which we could not check against a Rockstar text.

A few details on that last row, from the same recap. Safehouses, Nelson said, are "probably closer to the camps in RDR2" than to the safehouses of earlier GTA games, and a quick trim is only possible there. Your personal vehicle stores outfits and every weapon you have bought, and you can call it at any time. Money "matters more than in previous GTA games": some story missions need cash before you can go on. He also said the game has been 13 years in development.

What is not on the list matters too. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, a full first-person mode, or anything about buying businesses. Online is covered separately in GTA 6 online and multiplayer.

Is there first-person in GTA 6?

Not as a full mode at launch, as far as anyone at Rockstar has said. At a preview event, Rob Nelson told the blogger Davy Jones that the game is "primarily built around a third-person view". First-person appears when you aim with some weapons. Beebom reported this on August 28, 2026.

Two caveats. Rockstar has not put this in a Newswire post, so it stays "reported". And a leaked video reportedly shows a full first-person view; Rockstar has not confirmed it, and an unfinished build can contain modes that never ship.

If first-person is a must for you, the honest answer is to wait for November 19, 2026, or for an official word.

Police, wanted level and the criminal profile

Most of this comes from Nelson's interview with IGN, published October 7, 2026 and recapped by Inven Global. We read the recap, not the transcript.

The headline system is the "criminal profile". The game tracks consistent patterns in what you do, and those patterns affect how the world reacts to you. Bystanders no longer scatter automatically at the first sign of trouble. Story missions that demand violence, or defending yourself, are not held against you.

The police side is more grounded than in earlier games. A crime is only registered if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off. Officers remember what you were wearing, so buying a new outfit takes the heat off. Splitting up the two characters or swapping vehicles also helps you slip away. The familiar "Busted" screen and respawn are still there.

What nobody has described yet is the wanted meter itself: whether it still uses stars, how many levels there are, how long a pursuit lasts. If you see a "GTA 6 wanted level guide" with exact tiers, it is not based on anything Rockstar has said.

Stealing cars: tools, scanners, alarms

The one-button carjack is gone, per Nelson. Locked and more advanced vehicles need tools: a key cloner or a slim-jim.

Your phone gets a scanner. Point it at a car and it shows whether it is locked, whether it has an alarm or a tracker, and what it could be worth to sell on. Some trackers, according to the recap, can only be shaken off by driving fast.

All of this is reported, not posted by Rockstar. It does fit the "grounded" direction of the police changes, but we would not plan a car-theft route around it until the game is out.

Weather, hurricanes and 170 animal species

This part is on firmer ground: Rockstar gave the details to Game Informer for its September 29, 2026 issue.

Weather is local. Clouds move across the map, rain can fall in the distance while you stay dry, surfaces stay wet after a shower, and rainbows appear. Leonida also gets tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. Rockstar has not said how often a hurricane arrives or what it does to missions and traffic.

Wildlife is broad: over 170 species on land, in the air and in the water. Native animals include flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators; invasive ones include green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. They are grouped as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, and Nelson mentioned animal collecting as an activity. Where all of this lives is in our GTA 6 map guide.

What the Extended Look showed

"Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" premiered on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 3 pm ET, then on Rockstar's YouTube channel and website at 9 pm ET the same day. Rockstar describes it as "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5".

That wording matters. It means the footage is from the game running on a PS5, not pre-rendered cinematics. It does not mean everything was played live in one take: it is an edited film. Rockstar has not published the exact running time.

The two earlier trailers and their records are in GTA 6 trailers. For the people you see in the Extended Look, see our GTA 6 characters guide. The music you hear on the in-game radio is covered in GTA 6 radio and music.

What usually goes wrong

Leaked frames treated as fact. Footage from an unfinished build circulates under titles like "GTA 6 gameplay". Rockstar has not confirmed it. Features in a test build can be cut or changed. We sort each claim in GTA 6 confirmed vs rumors.

"First-person confirmed". Claims about the leak blur easily with Nelson's words. What he said is third-person by design, first-person only when aiming some weapons.

A recap of a recap quoted as Rockstar. Much of the police and car-theft detail reached us through IGN, then Inven Global, then everyone else. Each step can drop a qualifier. Treat specifics like "cops remember clothes" as reported until Rockstar publishes them.

Online features mixed in. GTA Online news is about GTA 5, not GTA 6. Rockstar calls GTA 6 "a single player experience" at launch.

Rockstar is likely to show more before release; we will move items from "reported" to "confirmed" as it does. In the meantime, check your controller with our gamepad tester, warm up for police chases with the reaction time test, confirm the GTA 6 release date, follow the GTA 6 news, or browse the GTA 6 hub and the full guides list.

FAQ

Is GTA 6 first person?

Not as a full mode, according to Rob Nelson of Rockstar North: the game is 'primarily built around a third-person view', with first-person only when aiming some weapons. Rockstar has not posted this itself, and leaked footage that seems to show more is not confirmed.

How does the police system work in GTA 6?

Per Nelson's IGN interview as recapped by Inven Global: a crime counts if someone sees it or an alarm goes off, police remember your clothes, and changing outfit helps lose them. Being 'Busted' and respawning are still in.

Are there hurricanes in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar told Game Informer that Leonida has tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, along with local rain showers. How often they hit and what they change in gameplay has not been revealed.

How many animals are in GTA 6?

More than 170 species on land, in the air and in the water, per Game Informer's interview with Rockstar. They are grouped as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.

Can you take over businesses in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said. Nothing on the official site, in Game Informer's coverage or in the Nelson interview recap we read mentions buying or taking over businesses.

Was the Extended Look real gameplay?

Rockstar says it was 'captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5'. That means footage of the game running on the console, edited into a video; it does not say every shot was played live.
