The GTA 6 map is Leonida, a fictional take on a US coastline, and its main city is Vice City. Rockstar sells the setting as "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America" and names six places to explore: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. There is no official map yet and no official size. Below you get each region in Rockstar's own words, the size claims with the name of whoever made them, and the parts that are still guesswork. Our GTA 6 countdown shows the time left in your own time zone.

Short answer

  • Setting: Leonida, "Vice City, USA". Rockstar never says "Florida", but every detail points there.
  • Six official regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga.
  • No official map has been published as of October 11, 2026. Treat any "official map" image with suspicion.
  • Size: Rockstar has given no number. "Twice GTA 5" is a relayed comment, not an announcement.
  • The world is busy: over 170 animal species, tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, per Game Informer.

Which city is GTA 6 based on?

Vice City, the series' Miami. Rockstar itself never uses the words "Florida" or "Miami": the official site calls Leonida "home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond", and its tour section offers "a few of the must-see destinations" across Leonida.

The Florida reading is ours and the community's, and it is not a stretch. Rockstar describes "the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands of Ocean Beach", a district called Little Cuba with its panaderías, a flea market and "the VC Port, the cruise ship capital of the world". Add an island chain called the Keys and a swamp full of alligators, and the map draws itself.

Two place names sit outside the six regions. Leonida Penitentiary is the prison where Lucia served time. Liberty City, the series' New York, is where Lucia's family came from, so it exists in this universe but is not listed as a place you visit.

The six regions Rockstar has named

Each region has an "Explore" section on the Only in Leonida page. The descriptions below are quoted from that page as it stood on October 11, 2026; the last column shows where else Rockstar mentions the place.

Region What Rockstar says about it Also mentioned
Vice City "still the sun and fun capital of America" Flash FM, "The Vice City institution"
Leonida Keys A "tropical archipelago" where life "isn't flashy but it's easy" Jason works for drug runners in the Keys
Grassrivers A "primordial expanse" of mangroves with "far deadlier predators" than gators Mud Dog Mike reports from his airboat
Port Gellhorn A "once-popular vacation spot" of cheap motels and empty strip malls Reached by Back Country Radio
Ambrosia "the heart of Leonida", home of the Allied Crystal sugar refinery Ambrosia's local biker gang
Mount Kalaga A national landmark up on Leonida's northern border Off-road buggy in the Ultimate Edition

A few details from the same page are worth knowing. The Keys sit "right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America". Port Gellhorn now runs on what Rockstar calls "malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks". Mount Kalaga offers "prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails", and its backwoods hide "hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals".

The Ultimate Edition item descriptions on the same site add more names: Shore Drive, Gambit Bay, Washington Beach, the Stockyard district, Watson Bay, Lake Leonida and Southside Vice City. We list them without placing them, because Rockstar has not said where they are.

Vice City now vs the 1980s Vice City

The old Vice City was a period piece. Its Steam page still opens with "Welcome to Vice City. Welcome to the 1980s" and describes a city "ranging from the beach to the swamps and the glitz to the ghetto". Everything sat inside one urban map.

GTA 6 moves the clock forward. Rockstar's line is blunt: "We're a long way from the '80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America." The swamps have become their own region, Grassrivers, and the city now shares Leonida with a smuggling archipelago, a refinery town and a national park.

Rockstar keeps nodding to the old game. The pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, is pitched as items that "flash back to when the neon burned brightest". And one Ultimate Edition revolver comes "sourced from the Vercetti Estate", a direct reference to Tommy Vercetti from the 1980s game.

Is there an official GTA 6 map?

No. Rockstar has not published a map of Leonida on its site, in a trailer description or in a Newswire post as of October 11, 2026.

The closest thing is physical. Rockstar's Vice City Collection collector's box, announced on September 24, 2026, includes a double-sided poster with a map of Leonida. It ships from November 19, and the game is sold separately. Until someone scans that poster, nobody outside Rockstar has seen it.

What circulates online comes from two places. The first is fan mapping: volunteers piece the world together from trailer frames and official screenshots, and their work is careful but still a reconstruction. The second is leaked footage from an unfinished build, which Rockstar has not confirmed. We use neither, and a map image without a link to rockstargames.com should be read as one of the two.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar has not said. No figure in square miles or kilometres appears on the official site or in Rockstar's interviews with Game Informer. What exists is a short list of claims, each with a different origin:

Claim Who and when Status
"Twice the overall size of GTA 5's map" Rockstar staff to YouTuber TCG, relayed by Game Rant, Aug 29, 2026 Second-hand, not published by Rockstar
About 2.5 times GTA 5 "Community mapping efforts", per CBR, Apr 2, 2026 Fan estimate
62 to 87 square miles Game Rant's own maths from GTA 5 at about 31 sq mi Estimate built on estimates

The same relayed comment also said Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos. We break the numbers down further, with the GTA 5 side of each figure, in our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 comparison.

Wildlife and weather in Leonida

Rockstar gave the details to Game Informer for its September 29, 2026 issue. Leonida has more than 170 animal species on land, in the air and in the water. Native ones include flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators; invasive ones include green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. Animals are split into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.

Weather is local rather than map-wide. Clouds move, rain can fall in the distance while you stay dry, surfaces stay wet after a shower and rainbows appear. Leonida also gets tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. Rockstar has not said how often a hurricane hits or what it does to missions.

What usually goes wrong

A fan map shared as "official". Fan reconstructions get reposted without credit and pick up an "official" label on the way. Check the source: if the image does not come from rockstargames.com, it is not Rockstar's.

"Twice the size of GTA 5" quoted as fact. It is a comment Rockstar staff reportedly made to a YouTuber, relayed by the press. The same relay compares GTA 6 with Red Dead Redemption 2 in a way that gives a different area, so the numbers are rough.

Leaked footage used as evidence. Videos from an unfinished build have been circulating. Rockstar has not confirmed anything in them, and parts of an unfinished game can change before release. Our GTA 6 confirmed vs rumors page keeps the two apart.

Real Miami streets expected one to one. Ocean Beach and Little Cuba sound like real places, and that is the point, but Leonida is Rockstar's invention. Use the official names when you plan routes or search for spots after launch; a real street map will not match.

Liberty City counted as a region. It appears in Lucia's backstory only. The six regions on the official page are the full official list so far.

Rockstar will likely show more of Leonida before November 19, 2026, and the collector's poster will put a real map in people's hands on launch day; we will update this page when either happens. Until then, meet the people who live here in our GTA 6 characters guide, check the GTA 6 release date and platforms, hear the stations covering the Grassrivers in GTA 6 radio and music, or browse every page on the GTA 6 hub and the full guides list.
