The GTA 6 physical edition is a box with one download code and no disc. Rockstar says "A disc will not be included in the box." It expects boxes to ship from November 12, 2026, a week before launch.
The code works as soon as you have it, so a box that arrives by November 12 pre-loads on the same day as digital copies. Inside is the Standard Edition only: there is no boxed Ultimate. PlayStation codes are tied to the region of your account, Xbox codes are not, and codes in Japan expire 170 days after launch. Our GTA 6 countdown shows the time left in your own time zone.

Short answer
- No disc. The box holds one code for GTA VI and the Vintage Vice City Pack, per Rockstar Support (updated August 18, 2026).
- Boxes are expected from November 12, 2026. A code redeemed before launch starts pre-loading on November 12.
- Standard only. After redeeming the code, you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade in the PlayStation or Microsoft store.
- PlayStation codes work only with an account from the code's region group. Rockstar says Xbox codes are not region-locked.
- Rockstar lists the free GTA+ month for digital pre-orders, not for the box.
What is in the GTA 6 box, and what is not
Rockstar's support article on editions describes physical pre-orders in one line: "One code for digital download of Grand Theft Auto VI and the Vintage Vice City Pack". The pack has three parts:
- '55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage.
- Outfits and Hairstyles.
- Exclusive Weapon Pattern.
Three things are not in the box. There is no disc. There is no Ultimate Edition content. And the "One month of GTA+ Membership" appears only in Rockstar's list for digital pre-orders. The Rockstar Store repeats the main point: "Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12." It also sells the boxes "while supplies last".
A box still means a full download, with the same free space as a digital copy; our GTA 6 file size and pre-load page has the storage and download-time tables. A console without a disc drive loses nothing here, as our GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox Series comparison notes.
Boxed vs digital: the table
| Boxed (code-in-box) | Digital | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | One download code in a box | The game in your account's library |
| Disc | No disc in the box | No disc |
| Available from | Shipping and pickup from November 12 (expected) | Pre-orders open, launch November 19 |
| Pre-load | From November 12, once the code is redeemed | From November 12 at local midnight |
| Vintage Vice City Pack | Yes, physical pre-orders | Yes, if bought before November 20 |
| Free GTA+ month | Not listed | Listed for digital pre-orders |
| Ultimate Edition | Standard only, upgrade sold separately | Standard or Ultimate |
| Region lock | PlayStation: code region must match the account; Xbox: no lock | Must match your account region |
| Code expiry in Japan | 170 days after November 19, 2026 | Not applicable |
| Refunds and support | Rockstar Store: Xsolla; other shops: the retailer | PlayStation or Xbox support |
Source for every row: Rockstar Support, that is the editions article (updated August 18, 2026) and, for refunds, the purchase support FAQ (updated June 24, 2026). The Rockstar Store also says there is no disc. We read both articles on October 18, 2026.
When boxes arrive and how pre-load works
Rockstar gives an expected date, not a promise: "The physical version of GTAVI is expected to become available for shipping and pickup from retailers starting on November 12." The code inside works the moment you have it: "Codes can be used as soon as they are received to support pre-load on November 12." Digital pre-orders start pre-loading "on November 12 at local midnight".
That gives a box bought for launch day one weak spot: delivery. A box picked up on November 12 pre-loads alongside the digital copies. A box delivered on November 15 starts its download on November 15, three days later.
The Rockstar Store sends a shipping email with a tracking link, and several items in one order can ship as separate boxes with their own tracking numbers. Outside the US and the UK, "Additional duties and taxes may be imposed by local authorities". Launch day itself is covered on our GTA 6 release date page, and the local hour in the release time by time zone table.
Ultimate Edition with a boxed copy
There is no boxed Ultimate, and Rockstar says so directly: "A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available, but physical Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores after their Standard Edition code has been used."
The route for a box owner:
- Redeem the code from the box on your PS5 or Xbox account.
- Buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade in the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store.
- Pick your moment. Rockstar: "Physical version buyers can upgrade at any point after their digital download code has been redeemed."
The upgrade price depends on the store. The US Xbox Store sold it for $20 when we checked on October 11. On October 18 the UK PlayStation Store listed the upgrade as an add-on marked "Unavailable". The 16 Ultimate items are listed in our GTA 6 editions compared table, and regional prices for both editions are in GTA 6 price by country.
Region locks: will the code work on your account?
What decides is the region of your console account: "Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account." Rockstar's advice is to "buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems."
On Xbox the rule is short: "Codes purchased are not region-locked." On PlayStation a code from each group works only with an account registered in one of that group's countries:
| PlayStation code region | Account countries |
|---|---|
| Brazil | Brazil |
| LATAM | Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay |
| North America | Canada, United States |
| Korea | South Korea |
| Japan | Japan |
| United Kingdom | United Kingdom |
| Saudi Arabia & UAE | Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates |
| Rest of Asia | Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand |
| Rest of EMEA and Asia | Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine |
The groups cover 63 countries, copied from Rockstar's article as of October 18, 2026. Russia and Kazakhstan are in none of them, and on October 18 the Rockstar Store told a visitor from Kazakhstan: "This title is unavailable in your country or region". For its own boxes the Rockstar Store is stricter: a box shipped to one of the 17 European countries on its shipping list works only with an account from those 17 countries.
Will GTA 6 come out on disc later?
Rockstar has not announced a disc. Its support article (updated August 18, 2026) and its store both say "A disc will not be included in the box", and neither page mentions a disc later.
Talk of a later disc goes back to a support email. On June 25, 2026, ComicBook.com reported, citing a screenshot published by Vice, that Rockstar Support told buyers they "will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following month." On June 27, 2026, ComicBook.com reported the opposite: a source quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, "with knowledge of the plans", said no GTA 6 discs were planned, either at launch or in December.
Both are press reports. The official pages say only what is in the box today.
What usually goes wrong
A PlayStation code from another region will not redeem. Sign: the box code fails on your PS5 account. Cause: the code belongs to a different region group, for example a UK box on a US account. Fix: buy from a retailer in your account's country. On Xbox, Rockstar says codes are not region-locked.
The box arrives after November 12. Sign: digital buyers are pre-loading while you wait for the courier. Cause: the code only works once it is in your hands. Fix: if launch day matters, pick the box up in a store from November 12 or buy digital.
No free GTA+ month after redeeming. Sign: the GTA+ offer does not appear. Cause: Rockstar lists the month for digital pre-orders only. Fix: if you want the month, pre-order digitally; how GTA+ works is in our GTA 6 pre-order guide.
A second-hand box with a used code. Sign: the code is rejected as already redeemed. Cause: once redeemed, the game stays on the first buyer's account, and the box is just packaging. Rockstar says nothing about resale. Fix: buy a new box from a retailer.
A refund or delivery problem. Sign: a Rockstar Store box is late, or you want to cancel. Cause: Rockstar Store physical orders are handled by Xsolla. Fix: contact Xsolla support or cancel through the Xsolla link in Rockstar's purchase support FAQ. Boxes from other shops go back to the retailer that sold them.

FAQ
Does GTA 6 come on a disc?
No. Rockstar: "A disc will not be included in the box." The box holds one download code for the game and the Vintage Vice City Pack.
When can I get the GTA 6 physical copy?
Rockstar expects boxes to ship and be ready for pickup from November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch. The code works as soon as you have it, so a box that arrives by November 12 pre-loads on that day.
Is there a physical Ultimate Edition?
No. Rockstar says a physical Ultimate Edition is not available. Buy the boxed Standard, redeem the code, then buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade in the PlayStation or Microsoft store.
Will a boxed code from another country work?
On PlayStation, only if your account is registered in a country from the code's region group; Rockstar lists nine groups. Xbox codes are not region-locked, per Rockstar.
Do boxed copies get the pre-order bonus?
Yes. Rockstar lists the Vintage Vice City Pack for physical pre-orders. The free month of GTA+ is listed only for digital pre-orders.
