In the US and Canada, GTA 6 is rated ESRB M for Mature 17+. PlayStation Stores in five more countries show 18+: PEGI 18 (UK), USK 18 (Germany), R 18+ (Australia), CERO Z (Japan), ClassInd 18+ (Brazil).
Each rating below links to the page where we read it on October 18, 2026. Two things are missing: PEGI's own database has no GTA VI entry yet, and the Australian classification site did not open for us, so the R 18+ comes from the Australian PlayStation Store. Our GTA 6 countdown shows how long is left until the November 19 launch in your time zone.

Short answer
- ESRB: M for Mature 17+, seven content descriptors plus In-Game Purchases. ESRB lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series only.
- PlayStation Stores in the UK, Germany, Australia, Japan and Brazil show 18+ ratings: PEGI 18, USK 18, R 18+, CERO Z, ClassInd 18+.
- Japan: the store does not sell CERO Z games to under-18s, and buying one takes a credit card.
- UK and Ireland: adult PlayStation accounts need an age check for chat and other communication features. The rule applies to every game.
- At home, the limit is the child's account: PS5 and Xbox block games above a set age level; Steam lets a parent choose which games a child can open.
GTA 6 age rating by country
| Where | Rating | Content labels, as published | Where we read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, Canada | ESRB M (Mature 17+) | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol; In-Game Purchases | esrb.org |
| United Kingdom | PEGI 18 | Drugs, In-Game Purchases, Sexual Content, Violence | PlayStation Store UK |
| Germany | USK 18 | Drastische Gewalt, Drogen, Kriminelle Rollenbilder; In-Game-Käufe | usk.de, PlayStation Store DE |
| Australia | ACB R 18+ | Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes | PlayStation Store AU |
| Japan | CERO Z (18+) | No labels in text; not sold to under-18s | PlayStation Store JP |
| Brazil | ClassInd 18+ | Conteúdo Sexual, Drogas, Linguagem Imprópria, Violência | PlayStation Store BR |
All six rows were checked on October 18, 2026.
Two rows need a note. usk.de lists GTA VI for PS5 and for Xbox Series with the labels above, but shows the age only as an icon; the number 18 comes from the German PlayStation Store, which words one label differently: "Problematische Vorbilder". The Australian site classification.gov.au did not open for us on October 18, so the R 18+ and its labels are copied from the Australian PlayStation Store.
For New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India and South Korea we have no confirmed rating. GTA VI is on Rockstar's PlayStation Store pre-order list in all five, but we found no official rating page that we could read, and the Korean store shows its rating as an icon we could not read as text. The ratings for these countries quoted online had no official source we could open.
What the rating labels mean
Each board lists what earned the rating. For a parent, these labels say what is in the game.
- ESRB (US, Canada): Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. "In-Game Purchases" is a separate note about paid extras, not about content.
- PEGI (UK store): Drugs, In-Game Purchases, Sexual Content, Violence. On October 11 the same store showed a longer list: "Drugs, Sexual Content, Extreme Violence, Nudity, In-Game Purchases". If two articles quote different PEGI labels, check their dates: the list changed within a week.
- USK (Germany): "Drastische Gewalt" (graphic violence), "Drogen" (drugs), "Kriminelle Rollenbilder" (criminal role models), plus "In-Game-Käufe" (in-game purchases).
- ACB (Australia): Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes.
- CERO (Japan): Z means "for ages 18 and over", in the store's own words 18才以上対象.
- ClassInd (Brazil): sexual content, drugs, inappropriate language, violence.
GTA Online pages on rockstargames.com carry "In-Game Purchases, Users Interact", while the ESRB card for GTA VI has only "In-Game Purchases". Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA VI, yet the stores mark In-Game Purchases; what is known is on our GTA 6 online page.
Is there an age check when you buy or play?
Not for the game itself, as far as the Rockstar pages we opened go. The checks come from accounts and platforms:
- Rockstar Games account. The legal text on the store pages says some features may require "Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies)". Error 4003, per Rockstar Support, "occurs when your account does not meet the age requirements necessary for the content you are trying to access".
- PlayStation in the UK and Ireland. "Age verification is now required for UK & Ireland adult accounts to access certain features." Without it, "you can continue playing on PlayStation but communication features won't be available until you do." The PlayStation FAQ lists three methods: mobile phone, facial scan and ID. The provider named on the page is Yoti. This rule covers every game, not only GTA 6.
- PlayStation in Japan. The store does not sell CERO Z games to anyone under 18, and CERO Z content, including trial versions, can only be paid for by credit card. The card is charged the full price even if the wallet has money.
- Xbox. A family member's age limits follow the birthdate on their Microsoft account by default, per Xbox Support.
How ratings decide where GTA 6 is sold
Rockstar names age ratings among the things that decide where the game goes on sale: "GTAVI will be made available in additional countries as allowed by platform policies, regional regulations, and age ratings." That line closes Rockstar's pre-order support article, last updated June 26, 2026.
The article lists 62 countries for the PlayStation Store, 39 for the Xbox Store and 30 for the Rockstar Store. Russia and Kazakhstan are on none of the three lists. Where the game is on sale, prices differ by region, and our GTA 6 price by country table compares them; ordering, bonuses and deadlines are in the GTA 6 pre-order guide.
The official release date is November 19, 2026, as covered on our release date page. The local hour, and in some time zones the date, is in the release time by time zone table. Boxed copies add a region rule of their own: the GTA 6 physical edition page lists the region groups for PlayStation codes.
What usually goes wrong
Most rating mix-ups come down to a stale "Rating Pending", the missing PEGI card or the wrong "GTA 6" entry in a rating database.
An article says GTA 6 is still "Rating Pending". Sign: a post or video claims there is no rating yet. Cause: it was written before the ratings appeared; on October 11 the German PlayStation Store still showed "USK Rating Pending". Fix: check the ESRB page or your regional store. On October 18, rockstargames.com/VI itself listed the ESRB descriptors at the bottom of the page.
PEGI search finds nothing. Sign: pegi.info answers "Found 0 results" for Grand Theft Auto VI. Cause: on October 18 the PEGI search had no GTA VI entry, although the UK PlayStation Store shows PEGI 18. Fix: rely on the store badge and search pegi.info again closer to launch.
The wrong "GTA 6" entry. Sign: a rating database returns several results, and some are other games. Cause: a usk.de search for "Grand Theft Auto VI" returns 19 titles, among them the Vice City Definitive Edition, and search results for the Australian database show unrelated entries named "GTA 6". Fix: pick the entry titled exactly "Grand Theft Auto VI", with Rockstar Games as publisher and your platform listed.
Chat is locked on a UK or Irish account. Sign: an adult can play, but voice and text chat are off. Cause: PlayStation age verification is not done. Fix: complete the check when the console asks, or start it from the PlayStation FAQ page, which has a "Verify now" link and a QR code.
For the release date, platforms and the other common questions, see our GTA 6 FAQ; what is official and what is still a rumor is sorted in GTA 6: confirmed vs rumors.
For parents: what actually limits access
A rating tells you what is in the game. At home, what stops a child from starting it is the child's own account: on PS5 and Xbox a parent sets an age level, and on Steam a parent picks which games the child can open.
- PlayStation. On PS5 go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management and pick the child. The controls include an age level for games, a monthly spending limit (0 by default) and limits on chat. With the preset levels, a PS5 game starts only "if the age rating is the same or lower than the child's age". Full steps: PlayStation parental controls.
- Xbox. Press the Xbox button, then Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, and set the age level under Access to content. When an adult and a child are both signed in, the console applies the youngest member's limits. An exception granted with "Always" is permanent and cannot be revoked. Full steps: Xbox age limits.
- Steam. GTA 6 has no PC version announced, so this matters for other games on a shared PC, such as GTA V Enhanced or Legacy. Steam Families replaced Family View: in Account Details > Family Management > Manage, expand the child's entry and turn on "Enable Parental controls" to set game access and playtime. Full steps: Steam Families guide.
GTA VI carries the In-Game Purchases label, so set the spending limit along with the age level. Everything else we track about the game is in the GTA 6 hub.
FAQ
What is GTA 6 rated?
ESRB M (Mature 17+) in the US and Canada. On October 18, 2026 the PlayStation Store showed PEGI 18 in the UK, USK 18 in Germany, R 18+ in Australia, CERO Z in Japan and ClassInd 18+ in Brazil.
What content gave GTA 6 its M rating?
The ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The rating card also notes In-Game Purchases.
Do you need ID to play GTA 6?
None of the Rockstar pages we checked announces an ID check for the game. Platforms have their own rules: UK and Ireland PlayStation accounts must verify age to use chat and other communication features, and in Japan CERO Z games are sold only by credit card and not to anyone under 18.
Can a 16-year-old buy GTA 6?
Not in stores that follow an 18+ rating: PEGI 18, USK 18, R 18+ or CERO Z. The Japanese PlayStation Store says outright that it does not sell CERO Z games to under-18s. In the US and Canada the ESRB rating is M, which means 17+.
Is GTA 6 still "Rating Pending"?
No. That label comes from older pages: on October 11, 2026 the German PlayStation Store still showed "USK Rating Pending". On October 18 the ESRB, usk.de and five regional PlayStation Stores all showed a rating.
