The GTA 6 file size has not been published. As of October 11, 2026, neither the PlayStation Store nor the Xbox Store nor the Rockstar Store lists a download size, so any number you see online is a guess. What is official is the pre-load date: digital pre-orders can download the game from November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch. Our GTA 6 countdown shows the time left in your own time zone.

That leaves one practical job: free up space on your console now and know how long a big download takes on your connection. Both tables below are built for exactly that.

Short answer

  • File size: not announced on any official store page as of October 11, 2026.
  • Pre-load: from November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders and codes from boxes; PlayStation calls it 7-day pre-load access.
  • The boxed edition is a code in a box, not a disc; it ships and is ready for pickup from November 12 (expected).
  • Smallest current console storage: Xbox Series S with 512 GB. Sony and Microsoft both note that part of the SSD is reserved for the system.
  • At 100 Mbit/s, each 100 GB takes at least 2 hours 13 minutes to download.

How many GB is GTA 6?

Not announced. On October 11, 2026 we found no size on the PlayStation Store pages for the US, UK and Germany, on the Xbox Store card, or on the Rockstar Store page. The PlayStation page lists features such as SSD "near-instant load times" and pre-load access, but no gigabytes.

Numbers like "250 GB" travel from site to site without a source. None of them traces back to Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. When an official size appears, it will be on the store page, so look again when pre-load opens on November 12.

When does GTA 6 pre-load start?

On November 12, 2026. Rockstar announced it with the pre-order post: digital pre-orders can pre-load "to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19." The PlayStation Store words it as "7-day pre-load access."

Three conditions apply:

  1. A digital pre-order or a redeemed box code. Rockstar opens pre-load for digital pre-orders, and a code from the box pre-loads too once it is redeemed.
  2. Enough free space on the console's internal SSD or an approved expansion drive.
  3. The console online during the download.

The pre-load date hangs on the launch date, which has held since November 2025; the GTA 6 delays timeline shows how it got there. Rockstar Support gives the hour: pre-load "will begin at local midnight on November 12, 2026." If you want to see what that date means on your clock, the GTA 6 release time by time zone page has the conversions.

How much space your console actually has

These are the capacities Sony and Microsoft list on their own pages. Both companies note that part of the drive is reserved for system software, so the space you can use for games is smaller than the number on the box.

Console Advertised storage Can you add more?
PS5 (825 GB models, including Digital Edition) 825 GB Yes, M.2 SSD from 250 GB to 8 TB
PS5 (current 1 TB models) 1 TB Yes, M.2 SSD from 250 GB to 8 TB
PS5 Pro 2 TB Yes, M.2 SSD
Xbox Series S 512 GB or 1 TB Yes, Storage Expansion Card
Xbox Series X 1 TB (2 TB Galaxy Black Special Edition) Yes, Storage Expansion Card

Sony's support page confirms that PS5 games can be downloaded to an M.2 SSD and launched from it. Microsoft says its expansion cards match the internal drive's performance. Both are sold separately.

Download time by connection speed

We do not know GTA 6's size, so this table uses three round sizes. It is plain arithmetic: gigabytes × 8 ÷ megabits per second. Real downloads run slower than the line speed, so treat each figure as the best case.

Size 25 Mbit/s 50 Mbit/s 100 Mbit/s 300 Mbit/s 1 Gbit/s
100 GB 8 h 53 min 4 h 27 min 2 h 13 min 44 min 13 min
150 GB 13 h 20 min 6 h 40 min 3 h 20 min 1 h 7 min 20 min
200 GB 17 h 47 min 8 h 53 min 4 h 27 min 1 h 29 min 27 min

On a slow line the seven-day window is the whole point. Even 200 GB at 25 Mbit/s fits into one night and the next day, as long as the download starts on November 12 and not on launch night. If your downloads crawl in general, the network checks in our Steam slow download guide (wired connection, router restart) apply to a console on the same network too.

A boxed copy changes none of this: it holds a download code, not a disc, so it needs the same download and the same free space. If the box arrives after November 12, your pre-load starts later; what is in the box and how its code works is on our GTA 6 physical edition page.

What usually goes wrong

Pre-load does not show up. Most often the purchase sits on a different account from the one signed in on the console, or the code from a box has not been redeemed yet. Check the purchase in your store's order history.

The console was fully off. A powered-down console downloads nothing. Leave it in a low-power mode with internet access enabled, or start the download by hand and watch the first few minutes.

Series S 512 GB is already full. The advertised 512 GB is not all usable, and current games are large. Delete or move games now rather than on November 12: moving games between drives takes time too.

Waiting for a boxed copy that ships and is ready for pickup only from November 12 (expected). The code inside cannot arrive earlier than the box. If launch-day play matters to you, factor in delivery time.

Trusting a size from a video thumbnail. Until the store page shows a number, nobody outside Rockstar and the platform holders knows it. Plan for the largest size you can reasonably free.

Before November 12, run through four steps. Confirm your digital pre-order is on the right account, and redeem the code from your box on that account the day it arrives. Free as much space as you can. Check your real download speed. Leave the console online. After that, the GTA 6 countdown tracks both dates, the release date page and the pre-order guide cover the rest, and the GTA 6 hub collects everything we keep updated. GTA V and GTA Online guides are in the GTA hub, the rest on the guides page.

FAQ

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

Not announced. As of October 11, 2026 the size is not listed on the PlayStation Store (US, UK or Germany), the Xbox Store or the Rockstar Store. Figures you see online have no official source.

When can I pre-load GTA 6?

From November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. PlayStation calls it 7-day pre-load access. Rockstar Support says it starts at local midnight.

Do I need a digital pre-order to pre-load?

No. Digital pre-orders pre-load from local midnight on November 12. A boxed copy holds a download code, and Rockstar says codes "can be used as soon as they are received to support pre-load on November 12."

Does the physical edition come on a disc?

No: the box holds a download code, so you need the same download and free space as for the digital version, as our GTA 6 physical edition page explains.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

Nobody can say yet, because the size is unknown. Microsoft sells the Series S with 512 GB or 1 TB, and part of that is used by the system. Free as much space as you can before November 12.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

It depends on the size, which is not published. At 100 Mbit/s every 100 GB takes at least 2 hours 13 minutes in theory; at 50 Mbit/s, about 4 hours 27 minutes. Real downloads are slower than the line speed.
