Genshin Impact Beginner Guide: Where to Start (2026)

Adventure Rank, not wishes, is the thing to push first: it raises the character level cap and unlocks the domains that hold your materials. Level 50 needs AR 25, level 90 needs AR 50, the talent book domain opens at AR 27, and a domain only guarantees a 5-star artifact at World Level 6 — Adventure Rank 45. Anything you farm before those gates, you farm at a discount you did not agree to.

The shortest useful action right now: open the Adventurer Handbook and take your four daily commissions.

Short answer

  • Adventure Rank is the master dial: character level 50 needs AR 25, level 90 needs AR 50.
  • Four daily commissions pay 60 Primogems — 1,800 a month, or 11 wishes.
  • Resin refills 1 per 8 minutes to a cap of 200, so a full tank takes 26 hours 40 minutes and then stalls.
  • Skip artifact farming until AR 45, when domains start guaranteeing a 5-star piece.
  • Level one main damage dealer and one healer to 70–80 instead of eight characters to 40.

What each Adventure Rank unlocks

Adventure Rank comes from quests, chests and spent resin — every point of Original Resin converts to 5 Adventure EXP. Hoarding resin therefore also stalls your rank.

AR Unlock Why you care today
8 Blossom of Revelation Character EXP books
12 Blossom of Wealth, daily commissions Mora and 60 Primogems a day
16 Co-Op, Domains of Forgery Weapon ascension materials
20 Spiral Abyss, Battle Pass First large one-off payouts
22 Domains of Blessing Artifacts, but not the ones you want
25 Reputation, Ascension Phase 2 Talents finally become levelable
27 Domains of Mastery Talent books on a weekday rotation
28 Serenitea Pot Your own local specialty garden
35 Imaginarium Theater Up to 1,000 Primogems a month
45 Mystic Offering Reforge the artifacts you do not need

Ranks 25, 35, 45 and 50 sit behind Ascension Quests. Adventure EXP keeps piling up while you ignore them, but the rank itself freezes — and so does the level cap.

The ascension thresholds are easiest to remember in pairs: AR 15 for level 40, AR 25 for 50, AR 30 for 60, AR 35 for 70, AR 40 for 80, AR 50 for 90.

Where should resin go before AR 45?

Into character and weapon ascension. Everything else waits.

You get 180 resin per day. That is six or seven runs at 20 each, and artifacts do not fit in that budget: below World Level 6 a Domain of Blessing does not guarantee a 5-star piece, and the 4-star ones you pull out will be replaced within a month anyway.

A sane order for the first weeks:

  1. Elemental bosses. 40 resin per claim, and the ascension gems for whoever you decided to carry the account.
  2. Domains of Mastery. 20 resin, talent books, rotating by weekday.
  3. Domains of Forgery. 20 resin, weapon ascension materials.
  4. Ley Line Outcrops. 20 resin — Blossom of Wealth for Mora, Blossom of Revelation for EXP books.
  5. Weekly bosses. 30 resin for the first three claims each week, 60 after that.

Mora runs out before materials do, and it is usually Mora, not a missing drop, that stops a build. The full cost list and priority order live in the Genshin resin guide.

Who to level first, and how far

One damage dealer, one healer, one shielder. That is enough for the story and the first Spiral Abyss floors.

Taking a single character from 40 to 90 consumes boss materials, three tiers of talent books and dozens of local specialties on a 46-hour respawn. Spread across six characters, the same pile produces six characters who cannot break a shield.

Working frame: main DPS to 80–90, healer to 70, everyone else capped at 60. By then you will know who you actually play.

If you have not picked a main yet, our which Genshin character are you quiz takes two minutes and at least narrows it to an element and a role.

Weapons follow the same logic. A 4-star weapon at level 80 out-damages a 5-star sitting at 40, and both are fed by the same Domain of Forgery materials.

Should a beginner pull on banners?

No, with one exception: the Beginners' Wish.

It offers twenty wishes at a 20% discount on Acquaint Fate, and Noelle plus one more 4-star or higher character are guaranteed inside those twenty. It stays open indefinitely until all twenty are spent.

Everything else is worth saving. One wish costs 160 Primogems, and HoYoverse publishes a consolidated 5-star rate of 1.600% on the character banner — roughly one per 62–63 wishes, or about 10,000 Primogems. How the counter, the 50/50 and Capturing Radiance actually work is unpacked in the wish pity guide.

A 5-star character does not clear the game for you. The story and the open world of Teyvat are beaten with the starting cast; the bottleneck in month one is materials and Mora, not raw character power.

How to stop losing a week to materials

Talent books and weapon ascension materials rotate by day: Monday and Thursday give one set, Tuesday and Friday the second, Wednesday and Saturday the third, and Sunday gives all three.

That rotation dictates your week. If your character needs the Tuesday/Friday set and you remember on Wednesday, you either wait until Friday or spend Sunday on it. The regional logic and the full weekday tables are in the guide on where to find ascension materials.

Local specialties are the second brake. They grow only in their home region and respawn after 46 hours, so they are collected on a route, not one at a time in passing.

Three things worth doing in week one: pin your character's specialty spots on the map, find the NPC merchants who restock them, and memorise which day your domain is open.

A daily loop that keeps you moving

The routine takes about fifteen minutes and has four parts.

Take and clear four commissions. Set a preferred region in the Adventurer Handbook and you stop crossing the map for them. Reporting back to Katheryne is not optional: 20 of the 60 Primogems sit in that report.

Spend resin. At least 120 a day, so the tank is not sitting at the cap by morning. It doubles as Adventure EXP at a 1:5 rate.

Check in on HoYoLAB. The daily check-in pays Primogems, EXP books and Mora, and the very first check-in adds a one-off 100 Primogems.

Run a specialty route. Not one plant at a time — a loop. Each node respawns in 46 hours, so a completed loop covers an ascension two days later.

The rest, exploration and story, happens at your pace. Chests, waypoints and statues are a one-time Primogem reserve that never comes back, which is exactly why spending it on a curiosity pull stings twice.

What usually goes wrong

Resin saved "for later." Symptom: the tank sits at 200 and the timer is dead. Cause: regeneration stops at the cap, and going from empty to full takes 26 hours 40 minutes. Fix: log in once a day and dump resin into anything useful, even if that is only Mora.

Artifact farming at AR 25. Symptom: weeks in Domains of Blessing and still a 4-star set. Cause: the 5-star guarantee starts at World Level 6, from AR 45. Fix: park the artifacts and put the resin into ascension, which buys more damage per point.

Rank stuck at 25, 35 or 45. Symptom: Adventure EXP rises, the rank does not, the level cap will not move. Fix: take the Ascension Quest from the Adventurer Handbook — the stored EXP applies the moment you finish it.

Talents that "won't level." Symptom: the talent button is greyed out. Cause: talent leveling needs Ascension Phase 2, meaning AR 25 and a level 40+ character. Fix: ascend first, then go for books.

Eight characters at level 40. Symptom: no team has enough damage for the Abyss. Cause: materials spread evenly across everyone. Fix: pick one carry and one healer, push them to 70–80, freeze the rest.

After a month, it is worth checking what you have actually absorbed about Teyvat — the Genshin lore quiz does that in a few minutes, and which Genshin nation are you is the lighter version. Everything else we have on the game sits on the Genshin Impact hub, including the breakdown of the official code redemption page that is worth opening at the start of every version.

FAQ

At what Adventure Rank should I start farming artifacts?

Domains of Blessing open at AR 22, but a domain only guarantees a 5-star artifact at World Level 6, which starts at AR 45. Before that, artifact runs hand you 4-star pieces you will throw away, and the same resin spent on ascension gives you more damage.

How many characters should a beginner level?

Two or three. Taking one character from level 40 to 90 eats boss drops, three kinds of talent books and dozens of local specialties. Eight characters at level 40 are weaker than one at 80 plus a healer at 70.

What does the Beginners' Wish give you?

Twenty wishes at a 20% discount on Acquaint Fate, with Noelle and one more 4-star or higher character guaranteed inside those twenty. It stays available indefinitely until all twenty are used.

Do daily commissions really matter?

They are the largest stable Primogem income in the game: four commissions pay 10 Primogems each, and reporting to Katheryne adds 20 more, so 60 a day and 1,800 over 30 days. Unfinished commissions do not carry over — they are replaced at the daily reset.

Why can't I level my character's talents?

Talent leveling unlocks at Ascension Phase 2, which needs Adventure Rank 25 and a character at level 40 or above. The books themselves come from a Domain of Mastery, which opens at AR 27 and rotates by day of the week.
