Steam Name Generator

Your Steam name is the one that shows in the CS2 kill-feed and the Dota 2 scoreboard, so it should be short, readable at a glance and free of characters the game font can't draw. Type a word, pick a vibe, and every result is checked against Steam's 32-byte limit.

Everything runs in your browser. What you type is never sent to our server.

How to use

  1. Type a word you want in the name, or leave it blank. Steam is pre-selected, so results are trimmed to 32 bytes.
  2. Pick a vibe. Pro gives short tryhard tags for CS2; Cool and Anime lean on Dota 2 and RPG crowds.
  3. Optionally add a font or frame. Steam accepts anything — but see the kill-feed section before you add ꧁꧂ or 𝔤𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠.
  4. Tap ☆ to save candidates, then Copy. In Steam: click your name at the top → View my profile → Edit profile → Profile name.
  5. Paste your final choice into the checker to confirm it fits Steam and see whether it also passes stricter platforms.

Steam name rules — bytes, not characters

RuleValue
Length2–32 bytes of UTF-8 (the client sometimes stops at 29–31; community guides report both)
Allowed charactersAny Unicode: letters of any script, symbols, spaces, emoji
UniquenessNot required — many accounts can share the same profile name (your unique handle is the SteamID and the custom URL)
Rename cooldownNone — change as often as you like
Name historyPrevious names are visible to others on your profile (the dropdown next to your name)
Used byCS2, Dota 2, TF2, and every Steam game that reads the persona name

The byte rule is the one that trips people up. ASCII letters cost 1 byte, so "ShadowFox" is 9 bytes. Cyrillic and Greek letters cost 2 bytes each, so a Russian name fits about 16 letters. CJK glyphs like 彡 cost 3, and math-alphabet fancy letters (𝕊𝕙𝕒𝕕𝕠𝕨) cost 4 each — a 6-letter word in a fancy font is already 24 bytes, and a ꧁꧂ frame adds another 6. The tool's Steam mode counts bytes for this reason.

The kill-feed problem: why some symbols show as □

Steam renders your name with the system font, which covers almost all of Unicode. CS2 and Dota 2 render it with their own font atlas, which does not. When the atlas lacks a glyph, the game draws a placeholder box — so a name that looks perfect in your friends list becomes "□□□Fox" in the kill-feed or on the scoreboard, and teammates can't say who got the kill.

CharactersSteam profileCS2 kill-feed / Dota 2 scoreboard
Latin, Cyrillic, digits, basic punctuationFineFine
Common symbols ★ ☆ ♛ ♥ → •FineMostly fine
Frames ꧁꧂ ༺༻ 『』FineOften □ — the Balinese and Tibetan blocks are not in the game font
Math-alphabet fonts 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝔤𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠FineUsually □ in CS2; partial in Dota 2
CJK glyphs ツ 彡 亗FineDepends on installed language packs — often fine, sometimes □
Emoji 🔥💀Fine□ or blank
Invisible ㅤ (U+3164)Fine (blank name)Blank gap

This is not a per-region thing you can fix on your side. If the name matters in the match, keep the visible part in plain letters and put decoration in the profile's custom URL or clan tag instead.

30 Steam name ideas that render everywhere

All plain text, all under 20 bytes, all readable in a kill-feed:

  • Sundered
  • marrowbone
  • Kilo Tango
  • NoScope Nate
  • vexley
  • Hearthless
  • Gutter Saint
  • plinko
  • Aster Vane
  • Bleak Mint
  • Rook 7
  • oxblood
  • Fennel
  • Lowpoly
  • Quiet Riot
  • Sixfold
  • Drift King Dan
  • hexwren
  • Cobalt Jaw
  • Midnight Tax
  • Saltmarsh
  • vantablack
  • Peaky Pete
  • Loose Cannon
  • Ferrous
  • Nightjar
  • Ghost Ping
  • Tallow
  • Brine
  • Second Wind

Two-word names with a space read best on the scoreboard; single lowercase words look the most "old Steam". Numbers work fine, but a birth year leaks your age to everyone who sees a kill.

What makes ours different

Steam name lists are usually a pile of edgy words with no idea of the byte limit. Here the generator is set to Steam from the start: names are built from your word plus five vibe dictionaries, trimmed to 32 bytes, styled with fonts and frames if you want them, and the checker at the bottom tells you whether the same name would pass Xbox, PSN, Discord or Riot if you want one handle everywhere. Saved names live in your browser. No sign-up, no ads inside the tool. It does not check custom-URL availability — Steam requires an API key for that — and it can't promise a symbol renders in a specific game font.

Privacy

Generation happens in your browser using word lists that ship with the page; the byte counter uses the browser's TextEncoder. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the saved list is local storage only.

FAQ

How long can a Steam name be?

Two to 32 bytes. That is 32 Latin letters, about 16 Cyrillic letters, or as few as 6–8 fancy-font letters. The tool counts bytes when Steam is selected.

Can I use symbols and fancy fonts in my Steam name?

Yes, Steam accepts any Unicode. But CS2 and Dota 2 draw names with their own fonts, and math-alphabet letters, frames like ꧁꧂ and emoji often appear as □ in the kill-feed and scoreboard.

How often can I change my Steam name?

As often as you like — there is no cooldown or fee. Note that your previous names stay visible to others in the name-history dropdown on your profile.

Is my Steam name unique?

No. Profile names can be shared by any number of accounts. Your unique identifiers are the SteamID64 and the custom profile URL, which does have to be free.

Does the Steam name change my CS2 name?

Yes. CS2, Dota 2 and other Valve games display the Steam profile (persona) name. Change it in Steam and the game updates on the next launch or lobby refresh.

Can I have a blank Steam name?

Yes — use the Hangul Filler ㅤ (see our invisible name tool). It shows as an empty gap in the kill-feed, which some servers treat as a reason to kick.
