You can't change your Steam account name. That is the name you type to sign in, and Steam treats it as permanent: answers on Steam's own forums say even Support won't rename it, and no setting or payment does. What most people actually want to change is the profile name, the one shown in your friends list, on your profile and in the CS2 kill-feed. That one is free, has no cooldown, and takes about a minute.

The three names on every Steam account

Steam keeps three different names, and most "how do I change my username" questions mix them up.

Name Who sees it Can you change it? Must it be unique?
Account name (login) Only you, on the sign-in screen and in account emails No Yes, and a used one is never freed
Profile name Everyone: friends list, profile, games like CS2 and Dota 2 Yes, free, any time No
Custom URL Anyone who opens steamcommunity.com/id/… Yes, any time, or remove it Yes

There is a fourth identifier underneath all three: the SteamID64, a 17-digit number fixed to the account forever. Trades, bans and server admin lists use it because names change. Our Steam ID converter turns it into every other format.

Why the account name is locked

Community answers on the Steam forums repeat the same thing: login names can't be changed, not even by Steam Support, and an account name is used once, even if the account is later deleted. The practical reason most often given is that Steam's systems treat the login name as a key for the account, so renaming it would risk breaking access to games and inventory.

The good news is that the login name is private. Nobody sees it unless you show it, and sharing it is a security risk anyway, because it is half of what an attacker needs. If yours is embarrassing, the only person who sees it is you.

How to change your profile name

  1. Open your profile: in the Steam client, click your name at the top, then Profile.
  2. Click Edit Profile.
  3. In General, replace the Profile Name field.
  4. Click Save at the bottom.

The new name shows in your friends list right away and in CS2 or Dota 2 on the next lobby refresh or launch. The limit is 32 bytes rather than 32 characters, which matters if you use Cyrillic (2 bytes per letter) or fancy Unicode letters (4 bytes each). The Steam name generator counts bytes as you type, so you will not hit the limit by surprise.

Your old names are public until you clear them

Every profile name you used is kept in a public list. On the profile it sits behind the small arrow next to your name, and anyone can open it. When we checked one public profile through Steam's alias endpoint on 6 September 2026, it returned names going back to 2011, each with the date it was set.

Each rename adds a tag to the pile. Clearing the list hides the pile on your profile, not the copies others already took.

You can wipe the list from your own profile: click the arrow next to your name and choose Clear Previous Aliases. A Steam forum thread from February 2024 that walks through it quotes Steam saying the profile keeps the previous 10 names. Two things clearing does not do:

  • It does not reach third-party sites that recorded your names while they were public.
  • It does not change messages, screenshots or match histories where the old name already appears.

If the reason for renaming is to get away from an old name, clear the list right after you change it.

The custom URL turns steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197… into steamcommunity.com/id/yourname. Set it in the same Edit Profile screen. It must be free (unlike the profile name), you can change it later, and you can empty the field to go back to the number link.

Two things to know before you pick one. First, the old custom URL is released when you change it, and someone else can grab it, so links you posted with the old one may start pointing at a stranger. Second, plenty of tools need the number rather than the custom URL; when a site asks for your SteamID64, open your profile link in its /profiles/ form or use the friend code from Friends → Add a Friend.

When a new account is the answer

Sometimes people want a new login name badly enough to start over: the login contains a real name, an old email handle, or something they no longer want to type. A new account is the only way to get a different login, and the cost is everything on the old one:

  • Games and DLC do not move between accounts. Family Sharing lets others in a family group play some of them, but the licences stay on the original account.
  • Inventory items can be traded only if both accounts meet Steam's trade requirements, and some items are not tradable at all.
  • Wallet funds stay where they are.

For most people the better move is to keep the account, change the profile name, set a custom URL, clear the alias list, and stop worrying about a login nobody else sees.

What usually goes wrong

  • Changing the profile name and expecting the login to change. You still sign in with the old account name. Write it down if you rarely type it.
  • Forgetting the account name altogether. Use the Steam Support form for a forgotten account name; it sends the name to the email or phone on the account. Do not ask strangers on forums to "check" it.
  • Hitting the byte limit with a styled name. Six fancy-font letters plus a frame is already over 30 bytes. Check with the generator before saving, or keep the styled part short.
  • Name looks fine on the profile and shows as □ in game. CS2 and Dota 2 use their own fonts. Keep the visible part in plain letters if the name matters in matches.
  • Losing a good custom URL. Change it only when you are sure, because the old one is up for grabs the moment you let it go.

FAQ

Can I change my Steam account name?

No. The account name is the login, and Steam does not change it, including through Support. You can change the profile name everyone sees, as often as you like, for free.

Where do I change my Steam profile name?

Open your profile, choose Edit Profile, and type a new Profile Name in the General section. Save. Friends and games pick it up within minutes.

Does changing my Steam name hide my old names?

Not by itself. Steam keeps a list of previous names next to your name on the profile. You can clear it with Clear Previous Aliases, but copies that other people or sites already saved stay where they are.

How do I find my Steam account name if I forgot it?

Use Steam Support's "I forgot my Steam account name or password" form with the email or phone number on the account. Steam sends the account name there.

Is my custom URL the same as my account name?

No. The custom URL (steamcommunity.com/id/yourname) is a public address for your profile. It must be unique, you can change or remove it, and it does not affect how you sign in.

Should I make a new account just to get a new login name?

Only if the account is empty. Games, items and wallet funds cannot be moved between Steam accounts, so a new login means starting from zero.
