Xbox Gamertag Generator

Xbox gamertags follow the one platform rulebook that is actually published: Microsoft lists every allowed character range. This generator uses that whitelist — 3 to 12 characters, letters, digits, space and apostrophe, no punctuation — so your tag is accepted first time and does not get a #1234 suffix for a silly reason.

How to use

  1. Type a word you want in the gamertag or leave it empty. Xbox is preselected: results are 3–12 characters with no symbols.
  2. Pick a vibe: Cool, Pro, Funny, Cute or Anime.
  3. Keep font and frame on "Plain" — Xbox rejects Unicode fonts, brackets and symbols. Spaces and apostrophes are the only decoration allowed.
  4. Generate, ☆ to save, Copy.
  5. Change it on the console (Profile → Customize profile → gamertag) or at xbox.com. The first change is free; later changes are paid.

Xbox gamertag rules (official)

Since the 2019 "modern gamertag" update, Microsoft publishes the exact definition. A gamertag is 3–12 characters of your choosing; if that string is already taken, Xbox appends a #suffix (a # and a number) so the full ID stays unique, with a total render length of 16. The character whitelist is broad for letters and strict for everything else: no punctuation, no symbols, no emoji.

RuleModern Xbox gamertag
Length3–12 characters (+ #suffix if taken, 16 total)
AllowedA–Z a–z, 0–9, space, apostrophe; Latin-1 and Latin Extended-A letters (é ñ ø ā); Cyrillic; Greek; Hangul; Hiragana and Katakana; CJK ideographs; Hebrew; Arabic; Bengali; Thai; Devanagari and Urdu
Not allowedPunctuation ! " # $ % & ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ ] { } ~ and underscore; symbols like ★ ✦; emoji; fancy Unicode fonts

UniquenessYes — a #suffix is added automatically when the base tag is taken

The checker at the bottom of the tool implements those ranges: paste any tag and the badge shows whether it is inside the whitelist. Note that Minecraft Bedrock, Halo, Forza and every Microsoft Store game show this same gamertag.

The #suffix and how to avoid it

When your chosen tag is taken, Xbox lets you keep the text and adds #1234-style digits. The suffix is shown in small type in most places and hidden in some games, but friends must type it to find you, which defeats the point of a clean name. The reliable way to avoid it: use two words instead of one (Hollow Fox instead of Fox), include a rarer adjective, or use a legal apostrophe form (Fox's Bane). Numbers are allowed too, but a tag that ends in digits looks like it already has a suffix. The generator's word pairs are built for exactly this — most are unusual enough to be free.

Xbox gamertag ideas

All tags are 12 characters or fewer and use only whitelisted characters. Whether a tag is free is shown when you type it on the change screen.

Letters from other alphabets

The official whitelist is unusual in allowing Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese kana, Korean Hangul and CJK ideographs, so a tag like Ночной Волк or 影の狐 is valid. Two cautions: many games render the gamertag with their own font and may show tofu boxes for CJK, and the 12-character count applies to rendered characters with at most one accent each, so stacked diacritics are rejected. The generator's Cyrillic alphabet switch produces valid Russian gamertags within the limit if you want one.

What makes ours different

Most gamertag sites still show xX_Name_Xx and symbol-framed names that the Xbox form refuses. This generator is built on Microsoft's published character whitelist — the only official name rulebook among the big platforms — with a 12-character cap and no punctuation, and it builds names from word lists around your own keyword so they are not the same DarkKiller everyone tries. Free, in-browser, no account, no ads over the tool. It does not fake an availability check; the console does that live when you type.

Privacy

The generator runs entirely in your browser: word lists and the Xbox whitelist are part of the page, nothing you type is uploaded, and saved names stay in your device's local storage.

FAQ

How long can an Xbox gamertag be?

3 to 12 characters. If the tag is taken, Xbox adds a #suffix so the full ID is up to 16 rendered characters.

Can I use symbols or underscores in a gamertag?

No. Punctuation, underscores, symbols like ★ and emoji are all outside the whitelist. Spaces and apostrophes are the only non-letter characters besides digits.

Why did my gamertag get a #number?

Because the text you chose was already taken. Pick a rarer two-word tag or add an apostrophe form to get one without a suffix.

How much does it cost to change an Xbox gamertag?

The first change on an account is free. Subsequent changes are paid; the price is shown in the Xbox store for your region.

Can I use Russian or Japanese letters in a gamertag?

Yes — Cyrillic, Greek, Hiragana, Katakana, Hangul, CJK, Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Bengali and Devanagari letters are on the official whitelist, with at most one accent per character.

Is this the same name used in Minecraft Bedrock?

Yes. Bedrock Edition, Halo, Forza and all Microsoft Store games display your Xbox gamertag, so this generator applies to them too.
