The button lives in your profile on every platform, not in graphics or privacy settings, and it is two or three clicks almost everywhere. Steam puts it under Edit Profile, Discord and Twitch under account settings, Xbox under Customize profile → Change gamerpic. Xbox is the slow one: it is the only platform of the five that verifies your image automatically and can quietly hand you back the previous picture.
Have the file ready first: a square from 640×640 up, subject in the middle. The avatar gallery is already built that way.

How to change your avatar on Steam
Steam keeps the avatar inside the profile editor. Open your profile, press Edit Profile, go to the avatar section and upload the file.
The same screen has a direct address in the shape of steamcommunity.com/id/yourname/edit/avatar. That route is live — we checked it on 6 September 2026 and, signed out, it answers with a sign-in page rather than an error.
Valve publishes no support article listing file requirements. What is known instead: Steam stores three shrunken copies — 32×32, 64×64 and 184×184 — and it is the only one of the five clients that shows the avatar as a square. The full number breakdown is in the avatar size guide.
Animated avatars and frames come from the Steam points shop. Your own GIF does not go in there.
How to change your avatar on Discord and Twitch
Discord. The settings gear next to your name → the account section → click the avatar circle → choose a file. The formats Discord lists side by side in its developer documentation are PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF.
Twitch. Settings → the Profile tab → Profile Picture → the update button. The banner sits on the same screen, but it is a different image at a different size.
The difference between them is what actually reaches the viewer. Twitch serves the profile picture at 300×300 — that number sits in the file's own CDN address — and it shrinks anything larger down to it. Discord goes the other way: its CDN documentation says it can serve any power of two from 16 to 4096, so on a large screen a bigger source really does look better.
The practical conclusion is short. For Twitch there is no point feeding anything above 640×640; for Discord it is worth going to 1024×1024.
An honest caveat for both: we could not read either help portal. Discord answers us with bot protection, Twitch returns a blank page without scripts. The paths above are described from the apps themselves, and the wording of the menu items may differ after the next redesign. The Discord numbers we quote come from its developer documentation, not from the interface.
How to change your gamerpic on Xbox
Xbox is the best documented of the five, because Microsoft actually publishes a detailed support page.
On a console:
- Open the guide: the Xbox button on the controller.
- Reach your profile: Profile & system → your profile → My profile.
- Open the setting: Customize profile → Change gamerpic.
- Pick or upload: choose from the pictures shown, or select Create or upload a gamerpic.
Create or upload leads to four sources: an image from a USB drive, a screenshot from the Captures app, an achievement image, and a shot from the Xbox Avatars app. From your own drive it accepts JPG and PNG.
In the mobile app: tap your gamerpic → the Profile tab → the edit icon next to the picture → the photo library icon → choose a photo. The app then asks you to pinch and drag inside a circle to crop, which makes the circular crop on Xbox a documented step rather than a guess.
The numbers Microsoft states outright: images over 25 MB or 6,000 pixels are not supported, and images under 512×512 may appear blurry. Uploading custom pictures at all is limited to adult Microsoft accounts.
The Xbox quirk worth planning around: the picture does not appear immediately, because it is being checked. If the check fails, the profile reverts to the last gamerpic or avatar you used. Custom gamerpics fall under the Xbox rules for player-created content, and the Xbox Safety team enforces them.
One more detail from the same page: the third option in the list of ready-made pictures is the last gamerpic you used on an Xbox 360, and the only way to change that entry is on an Xbox 360.
Can you upload your own picture on PlayStation
We could not answer that from official material, and here is what we found instead.
On 6 September 2026, the PlayStation account support section carried articles on changing your online ID, on problems after changing it, and on privacy and security settings. There is no article about avatars or profile pictures.
The PS5 online manual, which used to cover this, now answers with a redirect to the general help hub. The page was not rewritten — it was removed.
So for PlayStation we have neither a menu path we can stand behind nor a permitted file size. If your console's profile editor does offer a custom image, a 1024×1024 square works there for the same reasons it works everywhere else. If it does not, the avatar comes from the set attached to your account and our files are no help.
Why the new avatar refuses to save
Three causes cover nearly every case.
Wrong format or too heavy. Xbox names its ceiling: 25 MB and 6,000 pixels. The others stay quiet but behave similarly — a huge transparent PNG at absurd resolution tends to fail there too, without explanation.
The image failed a check. On Xbox that is documented behaviour with a rollback. Elsewhere a notification usually arrives, though it is easy to miss.
Nothing broke, it is the cache. You already see the new picture; your friend list still shows the old one. That is caching doing its job, and time fixes it, not a third upload.
If several failed attempts have left you renaming yourself and losing track of your own profiles, rebuild the name in the gamertag generator, or use the Xbox-specific one that checks the platform's rules.
What usually goes wrong
You uploaded a phone photo and got a cropped forehead. Cause: the shot was portrait and the platform kept the central square. Fix: crop to a square before uploading, not after.
Xbox accepted the picture and restored the old one an hour later. Cause: automatic verification rejected it, and Microsoft's page says the profile reverts to the previous gamerpic. Fix: remove text, logos and anything borderline, and use a neutral illustration.
Discord shows the new avatar in DMs and the old one on a server. Cause: separate caches. Fix: wait. Re-uploading resets the wait rather than shortening it.
The avatar is set but unreadable in the friend list. Cause: fine detail does not survive at roughly forty pixels tall. Fix: choose an image with a bold silhouette and one contrasting area of colour.
You copied a file to USB and the console cannot see it. Cause: the support page names JPG and PNG; other formats simply never appear in the list. Fix: re-save as JPG on a computer and put the drive back.

Caching, not an error. The platform keeps serving the old copy for a while, and it serves it to other people longer than to you. Uploading the file a third time does not make the cache refresh any sooner.
