A Roblox avatar is four separate things stacked together: a body package that sets the shape, a skin tone, clothing and accessories, and an animation set that decides how it moves. Only the first two are free by default, and the shape is a package you swap rather than a slider you drag. The profile picture is not a fifth thing — Roblox renders it from the avatar, so there is no separate image to upload. Start in the Avatar editor, and use Try On before spending anything, because Robux purchases are never refunded.
Short answer
- Free by default: the Man, Woman, Roblox Girl and Roblox Boy body packages, every skin tone, and the built-in emotes.
- The editor is Avatar in the browser navigation menu; on phones it is the Me tab, renamed from Avatar and rolling out by region.
- Advanced, in the lower-right of the editor, breaks the per-category limit — up to 10 items by Asset ID — and colours body parts individually.
- Try On previews any Marketplace item in 2D or 3D for free. There are no refunds, so this is the whole safety net.
- Grey X means a thumbnail failed and Redraw fixes it; grey blocks mean a regional item restriction, which is a different problem.
What an avatar is made of
Four layers, and mixing them up is the source of most confused questions.
| Layer | What it controls | Costs |
|---|---|---|
| Body package | The shape: proportions, head, limbs | Four packages are free, the rest are Marketplace items |
| Skin tone | Colour of the body, whole or per part | Free |
| Clothing and accessories | Shirts, pants, hats, hair, faces, back and front items | Marketplace prices |
| Animations and emotes | How it walks, and the gestures it plays | Defaults free, animation packs are items |
The layer people fight with is the first one. Roblox answers the "how do I make my avatar a girl or boy" question with a distinction worth repeating: the gender setting in your account settings is separate, and changing it does not change how your avatar looks. The look is a body package you equip from the Marketplace, and Roblox names four free ones — Man Package, Woman Package, Roblox Girl Package and Roblox Boy Package.
The profile picture is your avatar
There is no upload button, and looking for one is the most common wasted half-hour on a new account.
Roblox's help centre calls the image on a profile the player icon, describes the About tab's Currently Wearing section as showing how the player's avatar currently looks, and describes Redraw as regenerating your avatar's thumbnails. Nowhere does it document uploading a separate picture. In practice the profile image is a render of your avatar's head, which means:
To change your profile picture, change your avatar and press Redraw.
Two consequences follow. First, whatever you wear is public — the Currently Wearing box lists every item, and other players can click straight through to buy the same thing.
Second, if you wanted a custom illustration as an icon, Roblox is not where that goes. That job belongs to Discord, Steam, YouTube and Twitch, and our gaming avatars gallery plus the avatar size guide cover the formats each of those actually accepts. Changing the same picture across every platform at once is its own checklist, in how to change your avatar everywhere.
What you can customise on the profile itself is text and links: the blurb in the About box, and social network links, which Roblox restricts to accounts age-checked 13+ and shows only to users in nearby age groups.
What actually costs nothing
Start here before opening the Marketplace, because the free layer is larger than it looks.
- A body package. All four named packages are free, and switching between them changes the silhouette completely.
- Skin tone, including per-part colouring. Head & Body → Skin Tone in the browser gives one colour for the whole avatar; the Advanced button in the lower-right corner lets you pick a body part and colour it separately. Two-tone and mismatched-limb looks come from here, not from paid items.
- Default emotes. Open Emotes from the hamburger menu in an experience, or type them in chat:
/e wave,/e point,/e cheer,/e laugh,/e dance,/e dance2,/e dance3. Roblox notes these do not work where in-experience chat is disabled. - Layering past the soft limit. Roblox describes a soft limit per category — three hats, for instance — and the Advanced panel lifts it to 10 items entered by Asset ID. The Asset ID is the number in the item's catalogue link, so
roblox.com/catalog/62234425/Brown-Hairhas an Asset ID of 62234425. - Try On. Every Marketplace item can be previewed on your own avatar in 2D or 3D, and animation packs can be played back in the preview. Costs nothing, and it is the only refund you will ever get, since Roblox states there is no way to get Robux back after a purchase.
When something does cost money, the item details page is worth reading rather than skimming: it shows the Type, whether it is Tradable, and — on Limited items — a resellers list sorted from cheapest and a price chart over 30, 90 or 180 days. Where the Robux for it come from, with the real fees, is in how to get Robux.
Changing it: browser, phone, Xbox
Three interfaces, three different paths, and the mobile one has been renamed recently.
Browser. Select Avatar in the navigation menu. Open a category pull-down — hat, hair, face and so on — and tap an item to equip it. Tap a highlighted item to remove it, or use the Recent pull-down, where currently worn items appear first. If the avatar does not update visually, use the Redraw link underneath the picture.
Phone. The tab is Me, renamed from Avatar and rolling out by region — if you do not see Me yet, look for Avatar, it is the same tab. Select an item in your inventory and move the Wear This slider to Yes or No. Skin colour lives under Customize → Body → Skin. On tablets, tap More at the bottom, then Me, and the layout matches the website.
Xbox. Go to Avatar, press Y for the Avatar Editor, open Shop, and press A on an item to try it on — pressing A again removes it. Y on an item opens its details.
Inside an experience the only avatar control is respawn: the hamburger menu's Respawn, or the R key, which returns you to a spawn point. Roblox's own example of when to use it is losing an arm or getting stuck in a wall.
Emotes, animations and the camera
Emotes are the free layer of expression and they run off the list above. Animation packages are paid items that change how the avatar walks, runs and idles, and Roblox notes you can preview those in the item page's animation controls even though you cannot see them on your own character in the preview.
The newest layer is camera-driven animation, and it is worth understanding before enabling it for a child's account. Roblox's description is specific: the device camera mirrors your movements and facial expressions onto the avatar in real time, the video never leaves your device and is not recorded or stored, and only abstracted facial-animation values are produced on the device itself.
Some experiences read those values as a game input — steering or triggering events with expressions — but only in that experience, only while the camera is on, and Roblox states the values are not used to identify you.
Two practical notes. Whether an experience supports it is visible in the About section of its page, under the Communication field: Microphone only means voice, Camera only means avatar animation, both means both. And the feature is disabled entirely on Android devices with 3 GB of RAM or less, with Roblox naming Galaxy Tab A7 and A8, Xiaomi Redmi 9A and Fire HD 8 and 10 as examples.
Grey X, grey blocks, and resets
Three different failures that look similar and have nothing in common.
Grey X or the avatar not updating. A thumbnail generation hiccup. Roblox's fix is the Redraw link underneath your avatar's image, which may take a few minutes; if that does not help, clear the browser's temporary files and cookies.
Grey block characters. Not a bug and not your account. Roblox attributes this to regional content availability: where specific avatar items are unavailable under local requirements, the whole avatar is replaced with a grey block look. If it is happening to your own character, equipping or unequipping any item in the editor should clear the restricted piece. Roblox says it is working on a better-looking fallback.
A reset to the default look. This one is moderation. Roblox proactively checks profile avatars and automatically resets configurations that break its Community Standards, sending an in-app message explaining why. The details that matter:
- Customer Support does not manually review these decisions, so contacting support achieves nothing.
- There are no refunds for a reset.
- In most cases you still own the individual items — the combination is what was rejected, not the pieces.
- If the notification includes a Report mistake link, that is the only feedback channel.
- Re-creating a rejected look can trigger a second reset and further action on the account.
What usually goes wrong
- The gender setting was changed and nothing happened. That setting is separate from the avatar and Roblox says so directly: changing it will not change how your avatar looks. Equip a different body package instead.
- An item was bought and it looks wrong on this body. No refund exists for that, and Roblox names the Try On feature as the intended prevention. Preview in 3D, not just 2D, before buying — the 2D thumbnail hides most fit problems.
- The hat limit blocked the look. It is a soft limit, not a hard one. Advanced in the lower-right corner takes Asset IDs and goes up to 10 items.
- Someone offered a "free item generator" or an off-site avatar shop. Every avatar item lives in the Marketplace and nowhere else. Roblox's rule on offsite links is that the only links allowed on the platform point back to roblox.com.
- The avatar keeps resetting. Read the in-app message rather than rebuilding the same combination. Roblox warns that recreating a rule-breaking look may lead to a second reset and further action against the account.
Building a look and building an identity are separate jobs, and the second one is where Roblox is strict: the Roblox username rules explain why the display name is the part people read, and the Roblox username generator only produces names that pass the platform's character checks.
If a theme is what you are missing, avatar ideas by vibe works as a starting point and gaming wallpapers matches the rest of the setup. New accounts should read the beginner guide first, anyone weighing a subscription should see what Premium and Plus give, and everything else we have sits in the Roblox hub.
FAQ
How do I change my Roblox profile picture?
By changing your avatar. Roblox's help centre calls the image on a profile the player icon and describes Redraw as regenerating your avatar's thumbnails; it documents no way to upload a separate picture. The headshot is a render of your avatar, so the editor is the only control you have over it.
What is free on a Roblox avatar?
The four body packages Roblox names — Man Package, Woman Package, Roblox Girl Package and Roblox Boy Package — plus skin tone, per-body-part colouring through the Advanced panel, and the default emotes. Everything in the Marketplace has a price, though the Marketplace filter lets you sort by price to find items listed at zero.
Why did my avatar reset to a default look?
Roblox proactively checks profile avatars and automatically resets ones that break its Community Standards, with an in-app message explaining why. Support does not review these decisions and does not refund them; the notification may carry a Report mistake option, and that is the only channel.
Can I wear more than three hats on Roblox?
Yes. Roblox describes a soft limit per category, and the Advanced button in the lower-right of the Avatar Editor lets you add up to 10 items by entering their Asset ID — the number inside an item's catalogue link.
Why is my avatar showing as grey blocks?
Roblox attributes grey block characters to regional content availability: in some regions specific avatar items are unavailable, so the whole avatar is replaced with the grey block look. If it is your own character, equipping or unequipping any item in the editor should clear the restricted piece.
