A clan tag is two to five characters that sit in front of every member's name, and the single most important thing about it is where it lives. In CS2 the tag is a separate field fed by a Steam group, so it costs you nothing from your own name. In Free Fire, PUBG Mobile and Standoff 2 there is no such field for your nickname — you type the tag into the name yourself, and every character of it, brackets included, comes out of the same limit as the name. That difference decides how long your tag can be.

Below: the rules per game, which brackets survive which filter, and 208 tags we wrote for this page.

Short answer

  • Three characters is the default. Four on PC, five only where the limit is 16 or more.
  • In CS2 the tag is a Steam group abbreviation shown separately — it does not eat your name.
  • In mobile games you type it yourself, so 『NVX』 costs five of Free Fire's twelve characters.
  • Square brackets work anywhere ASCII is allowed; decorative brackets work only where Unicode is allowed.
  • Roblox, Minecraft Java, Xbox and Twitch accept no brackets at all — the tag has to become part of the word.

Where the tag lives, and what it costs you

Game How the tag appears Characters it costs your name
CS2 Steam group abbreviation, chosen in Settings → Game → Clan tag None — separate field on the scoreboard
Valorant No clan system; teams share the 3-5 character tagline after the # None, unless you type a prefix into the 16-character name
Free Fire Typed into the nickname All of it, out of 12
PUBG Mobile Clans exist in-game; typed tags are also common All of it, out of 14, and no spaces
Standoff 2 Clans exist in-game; typed tags are common All of it, out of 16
Minecraft Java Server-side prefixes only No brackets allowed in the name itself
Roblox None Brackets rejected outright

Two honest gaps. Valve does not publish a maximum length for the Steam group abbreviation, so we cannot quote a number — the field itself is the only authority, and a short tag is the right answer regardless. And Riot's help pages render entirely in the browser, so the 3-5 character tagline range in our open dataset comes from the client's own behaviour rather than from a document we can link.

Which bracket styles survive the filter?

Brackets are where tags actually break, because they are punctuation and symbols rather than letters, and every whitelist platform kills them first.

Style Example Passes Fails
Square [NVX] Steam, Discord, Free Fire, PUBG, Standoff 2, CS2 chat Roblox, Minecraft, Xbox, Twitch, Fortnite
Pipes |NVX| Same as square Same as square
Corner 『NVX』 Free Fire, PUBG, Standoff 2, Steam, Discord display names Every whitelist platform
Lenticular 【NVX】 Same as corner Same as corner
Ornate ꧁NVX꧂ Free Fire, PUBG, Standoff 2 Everywhere else, and it is two characters wide
Bare NVX Everywhere, including Roblox and Minecraft with an underscore Nowhere

The bare row is the one people skip. On Roblox and Minecraft the tag has to be part of the name — NVX_Solene on Roblox, using its single permitted underscore, or NVXSolene in Minecraft. That is not a workaround, it is the only shape those platforms have. We confirmed the rejections on 6 September 2026 by sending ꧁Frost꧂ and ★Frost★ to the Roblox display-name validator; both came back as invalid characters, and the Roblox username rules explain the rest of the character set.

Discord adds its own restriction worth knowing: its documentation states that usernames cannot contain @, #, : or the string discord. A tag built around a hash will not survive there.

Three letters or four?

Three, unless you have a specific reason. The arithmetic is simple: with brackets, a three-letter tag is five characters, a four-letter tag is six, and a five-letter tag is seven. In Free Fire that seventh character is more than half the name budget gone before the name starts.

There is also a legibility argument. A tag is read at scoreboard size, in a column that is often narrower than the name column, and three capitals hold their shape there. Four still work. Five turn into a shape rather than letters, which defeats the point — a tag exists so that someone glancing at a kill feed can tell that three of those players are together.

Four letters earn their keep in one case: when the clan name genuinely abbreviates to four and any three of them would be ambiguous. Nova Vertex gives NVX cleanly. Order of Embers gives OOE, which reads as a typo, so EMBR is the better call.

How to build a tag people can read

Take the consonants. Vowels carry sound, consonants carry shape. Nova VertexNVX is instantly legible; NOA is not.

Avoid the ambiguous pairs. 0 and O, 1 and I and l, 5 and S, 8 and B, and rn reading as m. At scoreboard size these are indistinguishable, and every one of them turns into a spelling argument in voice chat.

All capitals, always. Mixed case in a three-character tag looks like a typo, and lowercase disappears next to a name.

Say it. A tag gets spoken as either letters or a word. VRT is "vee-arr-tee", VERT is a word. Both fine — decide which one before you commit, because the clan will use it for years.

Search it before you adopt it. Three-letter combinations collide constantly, and the collision that matters is with an organisation that already has a logo. Ten seconds of searching saves an awkward rename later. And keep the same standards you would for a nickname: Garena's terms allow suspension over a User ID it finds inappropriate, and a tag is part of that name.

208 clan tags

All written for this page. The first two tables are three characters, so they fit anywhere including Free Fire with brackets; the four- and five-character tables need a wider limit. Take one as-is, or feed a word into the clan name generator and let it build the tag against your game's limit.

What usually goes wrong

Everyone in the clan writes the tag differently. One member uses [NVX], another 『NVX』, a third NVX-. On a scoreboard they read as three different groups. Fix: agree the exact string, brackets included, and paste it into the clan chat so people copy rather than retype.

The tag pushes the name past the limit. In Free Fire a six-character name plus 『NVX』 is eleven of twelve, and the twelfth is gone the moment someone wants a star. Fix: pick the tag first and build names inside what is left — the team name generator checks tag plus name against each game's limit as you type.

Two members' names start with the same letters as the tag. [VRT] Vertigo reads as a stutter. Fix: hand out different opening consonants when the clan forms, the same way you would in the nickname ideas guide.

The tag is already an esports organisation. You find out when someone in chat asks if you are affiliated with them. Fix: search before adopting, and prefer four letters if the three-letter version is heavily used.

The tag vanishes on save. You typed brackets into a platform that does not take them. Fix: this is Roblox, Minecraft, Xbox, Twitch or Fortnite — fold the tag into the word itself, or use the underscore where the platform allows one.

Set the tag before anyone renames anything: it constrains every member's name, and it is far easier to build four nicknames inside eleven characters than to retrofit a tag onto four names that already fill the limit. If the clan name itself is still open, the clan name ideas guide has 300 of them, and the font compatibility guide covers what happens if you decide to style the tag as well.

FAQ

How long should a clan tag be?

Three characters is the working answer. Four is fine on PC, five is only comfortable in Standoff 2 and Minecraft, and anything longer stops being a tag. In games where you type the tag into your own nickname it eats the limit directly: a five-character tag plus brackets leaves five characters of the twelve Free Fire gives you.

How do you set a clan tag in CS2?

It comes from a Steam group rather than from the game. Create or join a group, give it an abbreviation, then pick it in Settings, Game, Clan tag. It appears on the scoreboard separately from your Steam profile name, so it does not eat your 32 bytes. Valve does not publish a length limit for the abbreviation field, so keep it short and check what the field accepts.

Does Valorant have clan tags?

Not as a system. What teams share is the tagline after the hash in a Riot ID — three to five characters — or a short prefix typed inside the 16-character game name. There is no in-client clan structure that displays a tag for you.

Which brackets are safe for a clan tag?

Square brackets everywhere ASCII is allowed, and the Unicode pairs the mobile games favour. Roblox, Minecraft Java, Xbox and Twitch reject every bracket, plain or decorative — we sent them to the Roblox validator and they came back as invalid characters.

How do I check whether a clan tag is already taken?

There is no registry to check. Search the tag together with the game name and with the word esports before you adopt it: three-letter tags collide constantly, and the awkward case is not another clan but an organisation with a logo already using it.
