A Minecraft circle is a stepped outline made of square blocks. Choose the outer diameter, mark the center and two perpendicular axes, then mirror one quarter of the outline. Open the circle generator for a pattern at your chosen size.

Count the diameter, not the radius

Here, diameter means the number of blocks across the widest row, including both end blocks. A footprint 15 blocks wide needs a diameter of 15. A hollow outline and a filled disk share that outer boundary but need different amounts of material.

Mark the four extremes with temporary blocks before placing the rest. Count cells rather than gaps. A footprint that is one block too wide is much easier to fix before you add walls.

Choose an odd or even center

Diameter Center Useful alignment
15 blocks Middle of one block One-block doorway
16 blocks Between four blocks Two-block doorway
31 blocks Middle of one block Central pillar
32 blocks Between four blocks Double center line

With zero-based row numbering, the center cell of a 15-block circle is cell 7. For 16 blocks, the geometric center lies between cells 7 and 8. These are layout calculations, not special game rules.

Transfer the pattern row by row

  1. Clear a square as wide as your diameter, leaving room to walk around it.
  2. Mark both axes with a contrasting temporary block.
  3. Copy one quarter of the pattern, one row at a time.
  4. Mirror it across the vertical axis, then the horizontal axis.
  5. Check opposite sides before adding height.

For a team build, Minecraft color codes can help label your plan. On the ground, two contrasting materials are enough to separate the final outline from temporary markers.

Turn the outline into a building

Repeating the same outline upwards creates a cylindrical tower. Filling the center creates a floor. For a thick wall, plan an inner outline as well: removing a random inner row can leave uneven diagonal sections.

Minecraft's official building guide uses circles of changing size to construct a sphere. A dome likewise needs a plan for each layer. See our house ideas and Minecraft guide for places to use the footprint.

Common mistakes

  • The outline does not fit. Check radius versus diameter, and count end blocks.
  • The doorway is off-center. An even diameter has no single center block.
  • One edge looks flat. Find the first row that differs from its mirrored counterpart.
  • The wall thickness changes. Plan both outlines, especially for small circles.

Before you build upwards

Save the diameter, keep the pattern open and mark its center. Finish one complete layer before continuing. For a survival build away from home, prepare spare materials and review the beginner mistakes checklist.
