Most house guides are galleries. This one is a parts list: three builds — a starter house, a base cut into a mountain, a plot inside a village — each with a footprint, a block count and the reason it is shaped that way. The rules underneath all three are the same. Hostile mobs need block light 0, endermen need three blocks of headroom, and everything within 128 blocks of you is inside the spawning radius.
Start with the smallest version of this: a 7x7 footprint, two blocks of interior height, one torch.
Short answer
- Starter house: 7x7 outer, 5x5 interior, two blocks high. Bed, crafting table, furnace, double chest, one torch. Roughly 100 blocks of whatever you mined that afternoon.
- Mountain base: dig in, do not dig down. A 9x5 corridor with 3x3 rooms off it, and light every room as you open it rather than after.
- Village base: build a plot the same height as the houses around it, and do not seal the villagers in — a village you have blocked off stops being a village worth living next to.
- Two-block ceilings remove endermen by geometry: they need at least three empty spaces above a solid block to spawn.
- Glass, trapdoors, scaffolding, copper grates and leaves are surfaces mobs cannot spawn on. Use them as floors and roofs where lighting is awkward.
How big should a Minecraft house be?
Smaller than the one in the video you watched. That is the most useful line here.
A first house has four jobs: hold a bed, storage and a furnace, and not let anything in. A 7x7 outer footprint gives a 5x5 interior — twenty-five floor blocks — which takes a bed along one wall, crafting table and furnace in a corner, a double chest opposite, and room to walk between them. A week of survival with nothing wasted.
The number that matters more is height. Build the interior two blocks tall.
Endermen require at least three empty spaces above a solid surface to spawn, and that is the whole reason. A two-high room cannot produce one, so nothing teleports in and walks off with a block of your wall. You lose the chandelier and gain a room structurally incapable of hosting the only mob that rearranges your build.
When you outgrow it, extend sideways into a second 7x7 joined by a doorway. Two small rooms are easier to light and to seal than one large one.
The light rule that most builds get wrong
The old advice — a torch every seven or eight blocks — is a leftover from an older lighting model, and it puts far more torches than you need in the wrong places.
The current wording on minecraft.wiki: in Java Edition a hostile mob spawn requires block light 0, with internal sky light of 7 or less, checked against a random number between 0 and 7. In Bedrock most Overworld monsters cannot spawn if sky light is 7 or more, or block light is greater than 0.
Any block light at all is enough indoors. What kills you is not dim light, it is a corner with none: behind a staircase, under a floor laid over a hole, inside a wall cavity you never filled.
The second number: mobs spawn within a 128-block sphere around you in Java, and hostile mobs beyond 128 blocks from the nearest player despawn instantly. In Bedrock at simulation distance 4 spawning happens between 24 and 44 blocks out, and up to 128 at higher settings. A dark cave two hundred blocks away is somebody else's problem; the one under your floor is yours.
The third tool is choosing surfaces mobs cannot use: glass in all variants, bedrock, barrier, trapdoors, chorus flower, scaffolding, copper grate, leaves and ice. The block above a spawn point must also not have a full 1x1x1 collision box, which is why slabs and stairs work.
The starter house: what it needs on night one
Footprint: 7x7 outer, 5x5 interior, two blocks of headroom.

The order that works: floor, walls, door, torch, roof. Lighting before you close the roof lets you see what you sealed in. People do this backwards and then spend the night listening to something breathe under the floorboards.
One mistake to avoid on purpose: do not put the bed against the wall you intend to expand through. Moving a bed is trivial; moving a bed and the wall built around it is an evening.
The mountain base: what changes when you build into stone
Cutting into a mountain removes the roof, the walls and the weather, and adds one problem: you are opening rooms into terrain that may already hold a cave system.
Shape: a corridor 3 wide and 3 tall into the hillside, rooms opening to either side. Three wide reads as a hallway rather than a mineshaft. Rooms of 7x7 off it keep the same footprint discipline as the starter house.
Light as you dig, not after. Every time you break into open space, place a torch before going further. A mountain base dug in one session and lit at the end is a base with a spawn chamber in it.
Deepslate is a material, not an obstacle. Below y=0 the palette changes: polished deepslate, tiles and bricks read as built rather than dug, and mixing all three in irregular patches is what separates a carved base from a hole.
Copper is the material worth planning around. Four oxidation stages — unaffected, exposed, weathered, oxidized — and you can freeze it at any of them with honeycomb wax, or knock a stage back down with an axe. Nothing else in the game changes colour on a timeline you control. The variant list is long enough to build with on its own: cut copper with stairs and slabs, chiseled copper, copper grate, copper bulb (which dims as it oxidizes), copper doors and trapdoors, bars, chains and lanterns.
Sulfur and cinnabar are new options. Version 26.2 added both in the usual building set — stairs, slabs, walls and bricks — alongside the sulfur caves biome they come from. The first genuinely new stone palette in a while, and you are digging anyway.
The village base: living next to something you did not build
The appeal is trades, an iron farm eventually, and buildings that already set a scale. The mistake is treating the village as a lot you have bought.
Match the height, not the style. Village houses are small and low, and a tower dropped into one reads as an intrusion however good the tower is. Two or three storeys gets you a build that belongs even if the materials are nothing alike.
Do not wall the villagers in. The village needs its beds and workstations reachable, and one sealed into a box is a trading hall with extra steps. If you want a trading hall, build a trading hall.
Light the perimeter, not just your plot. Everything inside your 128-block sphere spawns, and a village is mostly open ground — the one build type where over-lighting is closer to correct, because there is so much ground with no light at all.
Steal the palette. Village houses use blocks you can get on day one, in combinations that already work: logs as corner posts, planks between them, stairs as roofing, a slab overhang. Copying that structure with your own materials is the fastest route to a build that does not look like a box.
Which blocks are worth the trip?
Ranked by what they change about a build rather than by rarity.
- Copper, in every variant. The only material with a controllable timeline, and the grate doubles as a surface nothing spawns on.
- Deepslate, all three finishes. Free once you are deep; the polished and brick variants carry a build on their own.
- Glass and glass panes. Mobs cannot spawn on them, and a glass roof is the cheapest way to make a small interior feel larger.
- Stripped logs. The best frame material in the game. Corner posts turn any square of blocks into a structure.
- Trapdoors and slabs. Mob-proof surfaces and the best detailing blocks there are: a trapdoor is a shutter, a shelf edge and a railing.
- Sulfur and cinnabar, if you are on 26.2 and already underground.

What usually goes wrong
Torches every eight blocks, and mobs still spawn. Symptom: something appears in a room you thought was lit. Cause: not the light level — an unlit corner. The rule is block light 0, so the gap is somewhere with no light at all, usually behind a staircase or under a floor laid over a hole. Fix: find the one square nothing reaches.
An enderman removes a block from a wall. Symptom: a hole appears overnight. Cause: a three-high interior gave it somewhere to spawn, or one wandered in through an open doorway. Fix: two-block interiors where you can. They take damage from rain and water, so an open courtyard in a storm clears itself.
The base was built over a cave. Symptom: mob noises with nothing visible, things appearing near the door. Cause: the 128-block spawning sphere includes the cave under your floor. Fix: dig down a few blocks in a corner before committing to the spot, or floor the whole build with slabs.
The village stopped working after you built in it. Symptom: villagers standing still, trades not refreshing. Cause: beds and workstations are what a village runs on, and you covered some. Fix: put them back; if you want control, build a hall on purpose instead of remodelling their houses.
Storage grew faster than the house. Symptom: nine chests along one wall and nowhere to stand. Cause: the 7x7 was right for week one and nobody re-planned. Fix: a second 7x7 through a doorway, storage in one room and the bed in the other. Extending sideways stays cheap; rebuilding does not.

FAQ
What light level stops mobs spawning inside my house?
In Java Edition a hostile mob needs a block light level of 0, so any block light at all inside a sealed room stops them. Bedrock is worded differently: monsters cannot spawn where block light is greater than 0 or sky light is 7 or more. In both cases one torch per lit area is the requirement, not one torch every eight blocks.
How high should the ceiling be?
Two blocks of headroom if you want it mob-proof by geometry. Endermen need at least three empty spaces above a solid surface to spawn, so a two-high interior removes them entirely, and it also removes the possibility of one teleporting in and stealing a block from a wall.
How big should a starter house be?
A 7x7 outer footprint is enough for the first week: it gives a 5x5 interior, which fits a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a double chest with room to turn around. Build it two blocks high inside and extend outwards later rather than upwards.

Yes, if you want the build to change. Copper goes through four oxidation stages — unaffected, exposed, weathered, oxidized — and honeycomb waxing freezes it at whichever stage you like, while an axe scrapes the wax off and knocks the stage back down. It is the only building material in the game with a timeline.
