"VAC was unable to verify your game session" means Valve Anti-Cheat could not confirm that your CS2 client was clean during that match, so it kicked you and locked matchmaking until it can. It is not a ban and it is not an accusation. In most cases it clears within minutes: quit CS2, exit Steam completely, start Steam again and rejoin. If the error stays, the remaining fixes below go from the least to the most invasive: verify game files, close other anti-cheats and overlays, stop running the game or Steam as administrator, remove -insecure from launch options, undo recent system-cleaning tools, and reinstall as the last resort.
What the message actually means
Steam Support defines the system in one sentence: "VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat, an automated system designed to detect cheats installed on users' computers." Detection leads to a ban. Verification is a different, earlier step: before and during a match on a VAC-secured server the client has to prove it is running the expected code. When that proof fails for any reason, the server drops you with this message.
u/Monso in the September 2025 thread puts it well: it "doesn't mean 'it found cheats'", it "just failed to verify your client and needs you to disable whatever is preventing it from doing that". A VAC ban, by contrast, is permanent and delayed, as the r/GlobalOffensive FAQ has said for years. The two are unrelated events.
The error is old. u/foto_grafen writes they first saw it over ten years ago and that it "often solves itself after some minutes". So the first fix is patience plus a restart.
Fix 1: restart the game, then Steam (works most of the time)
- Close CS2 completely.
- Exit Steam through Steam → Exit, not by closing the window. Check the system tray; the icon must be gone.
- Start Steam, start CS2, queue again.
Several commenters in the 2025 thread ("rebooting the pc usually fixes it") treat the PC reboot as step 2. If the Steam restart does not help, reboot Windows before touching anything else.
Fix 2: verify integrity of game files
This is the official Steam tool for a game whose files do not match what Valve shipped. The Steam Support article gives the steps:
- Restart your computer and launch Steam.
- Right-click CS2 in the Library (or the gear icon on the game page) and choose Properties.
- Open the Installed Files tab and click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait; the check can take several minutes.
Steam warns that "one or more files may fail to verify" and that this is normal: those are local config files that are not meant to be replaced. Two more official cautions: do not verify while running other heavy tasks, and do not verify several games at once.
Fix 3: close other anti-cheats and overlays
VAC shares your PC with FACEIT Anti-Cheat, Vanguard, EasyAntiCheat and whatever overlays you run. They usually coexist, but not always. u/itsbigbad in the 2025 thread could not launch after an update until they closed the FACEIT client. Order of operations:
- Close FACEIT AC, Discord overlay, MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner, GeForce overlay, capture software.
- Launch CS2 and queue.
- If the error is gone, re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit.
If a program is essential and refuses to hook the game, the official -allow_third_party_software launch option exists for that; see our CS2 launch options guide. Do not use -insecure, which the old r/GlobalOffensive wiki describes bluntly as "Disable VAC", meaning you cannot play on any secured server.
Fix 4: do not run CS2 or Steam as administrator
A May 2026 thread describes the trap exactly: CS2 started in administrator mode "does not let me join VAC-secured servers", and running Steam as administrator brought its own problems. Right-click cs2.exe and steam.exe → Properties → Compatibility → make sure Run this program as an administrator is unticked. Also clear any compatibility mode set there.
Fix 5: check system-cleaning tools and recent driver installs
u/Monso names one specific trigger: "CCleaner's USN Journal cleaning will cause it." Valve does not document why, but the pattern is consistent in the threads: a cleaner that rewrites system logs or files runs, and the next session fails to verify. If you ran a cleaner, a "debloat" script or a registry tool shortly before the error appeared, undo that setting and reboot.
Peripheral software is another candidate. A June 2025 post reports the error appearing right after plugging in a new 8000 Hz mouse. The mouse itself is not the issue; a freshly installed vendor driver or an aggressive polling setting can be. Set the mouse to 1000 Hz for one session and test; you can confirm the actual rate with the polling rate test and check that every button still registers in the mouse test.
Fix 6: remove custom resolution tricks
The same May 2026 thread traces a whole chain of launch problems back to a custom 1080×1080 stretched resolution created in the GPU driver. u/KaNesDeath's advice was to set a launch option with the monitor's native resolution (-w 1920 -h 1080) and let the game reset. Custom resolutions are fine when they work; when VAC starts complaining, they are the first non-standard thing to remove.
Fix 7: Windows and drivers
The generic checklist that the r/DotA2 wiki keeps for every Valve game applies here too: update the graphics driver from AMD, Nvidia or Intel directly, install pending Windows updates, close every other program, and reboot ("very important", in the wiki's words). If you use a third-party antivirus, pause it for one launch to see whether it is interfering, then add the CS2 folder to its exclusions.
Fix 8: reinstall CS2, then Steam
u/CarnegieSenpai's escalation ladder from the 2025 thread reads: restart CS → restart PC → verify files → reinstall CS → reinstall Steam. Reinstalling CS2 was what fixed it for them. Uninstall through Steam, delete leftovers in steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive, reinstall. A full Steam reinstall keeps your games if you preserve the steamapps folder.
When it is not you
In 2015 New Zealand and Australian players were hit with mass VAC authentication errors at the same time, and the thread from that period is still in the r/GlobalOffensive suggestions list. When the error appears for many people at once, it is Valve's side. Check r/GlobalOffensive or the CS2 Discord support channel before reinstalling anything: if a wave is going on, all you can do is wait.
What not to do
Do not look for "VAC bypass" tools; anything that promises to hide your client from the verifier is exactly the kind of software the detection side is built to find, and using it turns a temporary error into a permanent ban. Do not create a second account to "test" while the error is active: Valve's ido_valve, quoted in the subreddit wiki, stated that VAC and game bans are applied to all accounts that shared the same phone number at the time of the infraction, so a ban on one account is never isolated.
Getting back into the game
Once matchmaking accepts you, play one casual or deathmatch round first to confirm the session verifies, then queue Premier. If you want a warm-up map that is not the same Mirage every time, the random CS2 map picker takes one click.
FAQ
Is 'VAC was unable to verify your game session' a ban?
No. It is a failed check, not a verdict. VAC could not confirm your client was untouched during that session, so it removed you from the match and blocks matchmaking until it can. A real VAC ban shows on your Steam profile and is permanent; this error goes away after a restart in most cases.
How long does the VAC verification error last?
Usually minutes. Long-time players in r/GlobalOffensive report it often clears itself after a few minutes, and a Steam restart or a PC reboot clears the rest. If it persists for days, work through the file check, overlays and admin-mode steps in this guide.
Can I get the error without cheating?
Yes, and that is the normal case. Utility software that cleans system journals, an anti-cheat from another platform still running, a game started as administrator, or a broken game file can all make the check fail.
Will I lose Premier rating for being kicked by VAC?
Valve does not document what happens to rating or cooldowns after this specific kick, and the threads do not agree either. Treat it like any other disconnect: fix the error and rejoin quickly if the match is still running.
Does -insecure fix the VAC error?
No. The -insecure launch option disables VAC on your client, which means you cannot join any VAC-secured server at all, including matchmaking. Remove it if it is in your launch options.
