LinkedIn character counter
Live counts against LinkedIn post, headline, about and comment limits.
Type or paste your text and the panel counts against every LinkedIn limit at once, updating live and turning red when you pass one.
The limits
- Post — 3,000 characters. But the feed shows only about the first 210 before "…see more", so the opening lines decide whether anyone reads the rest.
- Headline — 220 characters. The line under your name, shown everywhere you appear — search, comments, messages. The most valuable 220 characters on your profile.
- About — 2,600 characters. Your profile summary, with only the first few lines visible before "see more".
- Comment — 1,250 characters.
- Company tagline — 120 characters.
The "see more" line is everything
A LinkedIn post can run to 3,000 characters, but the feed collapses it after about 210 — roughly two or three lines — behind "…see more". Whether a reader expands it is decided entirely by those first lines. A post that opens with its conclusion, a question or a surprising line gets expanded; one that opens with throat-clearing does not. The counter marks the 210-character point so you can see exactly what shows before the fold.
The headline works harder than you think
Your headline is not just on your profile. It appears under your name in every search result, every comment you leave, every message you send, every time you react to a post. Those 220 characters are the most-seen text you own on LinkedIn, and leaving them as a bare job title wastes them. Writing to the full limit, checked here, is worth the few minutes.
How it counts
Characters count as a person sees them, including spaces, punctuation and emoji as one each. Hashtags and mentions count toward the limit, and the panel tallies them separately. Line breaks count as characters too, which matters in posts where spacing is used for effect.
To trim text to the visible length, the truncate tool does it word-safely. Other platforms: X, Instagram.
Doing it without this tool
LinkedIn itself shows a countdown only while composing certain fields, and never marks the "see more" cut-off point where it matters most.
Word: counts characters but knows nothing of LinkedIn's limits or its fold.
Runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded — open DevTools, Network tab, and you will see zero requests while you use this tool.
How to use it
- Type or paste your post, headline or about text into the box.
- Watch the panel count against each LinkedIn limit.
- Make the first 210 characters of a post strong — that is all the feed shows before "see more".
- Use the full 220 characters of your headline; it appears everywhere your name does.
