TikTok character counter

Live counts against TikTok caption, bio and username limits.

Type or paste your text and the panel counts against every TikTok limit at once. The numbers update live and turn red when you go over.

The limits

The bio is the hard one

Eighty characters is tight — about a sentence. Fitting a description, a call to action and maybe an emoji into it is a real squeeze, and pasting into TikTok only to be told it is too long is a familiar annoyance. Writing it here first, watching the counter, means it fits the moment you paste it in. Hashtags in a TikTok bio are not clickable, so they usually waste characters you cannot spare.

The caption cut-off

A 2,200-character caption sounds like room to write an essay, and you can — but only the first 150 or so characters are visible before the reader has to tap "more", and most never do. Front-load the important words, the hook and the key hashtags. The counter shows how much of your caption lands above that cut.

How it counts

Characters count as a person sees them, so an emoji is one. Hashtags and the spaces around them count toward the caption limit, which is easy to forget when you add a dozen of them. The panel also tallies your hashtags, since a handful of well-chosen ones outperforms a wall of them.

For other platforms, the Instagram and YouTube counters work the same way.

Doing it without this tool

The TikTok app stops you at the limit but does not warn you as you approach it, and does not show the caption cut-off point.

A plain character counter gives a number but not TikTok's specific limits or where the caption is truncated.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your caption, bio or username into the box.
  2. Watch the panel count down against each TikTok limit.
  3. Keep your bio within 80 characters — it is the tightest limit.
  4. Front-load the caption, since only about 150 characters show before "more".
