How to Boost FPS in Roblox (2026): What Works and What Is a Myth

Two settings decide most of your Roblox frame rate, and both live in the same menu: press Esc, open Settings, switch Graphics Mode from Automatic to Manual, and set the graphics slider and the maximum frame rate yourself. Then press Shift+F5 to see what you actually get. Everything else — closing background apps, updating the GPU driver, checking that your laptop is running on its dedicated GPU — is real but smaller. And the largest single factor is not on your machine at all: how well the specific experience you are playing was built.

Step 1: take the graphics slider off Automatic

Roblox's own instructions are short. While in an experience, press Esc or click the Roblox logo in the top-left corner, open the Settings tab, set Graphics Mode to Manual, and move the Graphics Quality slider — right for better graphics, left for better performance.

Automatic is the default, and it means the device decides. That is why your quality seems to change between sessions and why lowering the slider sometimes appears to do nothing: you were never in manual mode. The support article on lag spells out the trade in one line — lower graphics levels reduce some visual quality, but your device works less, which can result in a better experience.

One thing the slider does not let you do is split the settings apart. It is a single number that moves render distance, lighting, textures and effects together. A player in an August 2026 r/RobloxHelp thread wanted exactly the opposite of the usual request — maximum render distance with minimum quality, to see across a map in Jailbreak — and there is no client setting for it. That is a real limitation, not something you are missing.

Step 2: raise the frame rate cap

For years the PC client rendered at 60 Hz and nothing you did in the menu changed it. That changed on 30 May 2024, when Roblox announced the Maximum Framerate setting on the DevForum. Their wording is worth keeping, because it is the whole answer to the unlocker question: many people used an external tool to run Roblox at their display's native refresh rate by removing the client's 60 Hz frame render lock, and the setting exists so that no external download is needed. It landed on Windows first, with Mac following later.

How high can you go? A Roblox Staff reply in a 2026 DevForum thread about the frame cap says it directly: the settings menu supports 240 FPS and can be set down to 60 in the same place, and above 240 FPS is not officially supported.

So the practical setup is: set the cap to your monitor's refresh rate if your device can hold it, or a value it can hold steadily if it cannot. A cap you constantly fall below is worse than a lower cap you always meet, because uneven frame times are what people describe as "choppy even though FPS looks fine".

Step 3: measure before you tune anything else

Roblox does not advertise these, but they are documented in Roblox's own creator documentation and they work in the normal client:

Keys What it shows
Shift + F5 Debug stats summary, including your frame rate
Shift + F3 Network debug stats, including data ping
Ctrl + Alt + F7 Network stats: data received and ping time
F9 Developer console: memory, network and script performance

Use them to answer one question before you change more settings: is your problem frames or is it network? Roblox's support article separates the two clearly. Network lag is other players warping around and actions taking too long to register — a connection problem, not a graphics one. Graphics lag is stuttering and choppy visuals on a device that is not powerful enough. System lag is what is left when lowering graphics does not help, and their advice there is to close other high-power apps so they are not taking the resources Roblox needs.

What the system requirements actually tell you

Roblox's requirements page is a lesson in what "minimum" means. The PC client needs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and a GPU with DirectX 10 feature level support; Roblox recommends a computer under five years old with a dedicated video card, or a laptop under three years old with integrated graphics; a processor from 2005 or later at 1.6 GHz or better; at least 1 GB of RAM; 300 MB of storage; and a 4–8 Mb/s connection for a single-use household. Linux is not supported.

Read those numbers again and it becomes obvious why "my PC meets the requirements" tells you nothing about frame rate. The minimum describes a machine that can launch Roblox, not one that holds 144 FPS in a busy experience. If you want to know whether your GPU even clears the DirectX bar, Roblox's graphics troubleshooting article gives the check: press Windows+R, run dxdiag, open the Display tab and look at the Feature Levels line for 10 or above.

The parts that are usually the actual problem

  • The wrong GPU is doing the work. On a laptop with switchable graphics, make sure Roblox is assigned to the dedicated card in both the Windows graphics settings and the GPU vendor's control panel. Players in the August 2026 r/RobloxHelp threads check this first, and it is also the first thing the commenters ask about, right alongside "is your monitor plugged into the graphics card, not the motherboard?" on desktops.
  • Old or broken graphics drivers. Roblox's graphics article says to find the card Roblox is actually using in Roblox Studio's Diagnostics under GfxCard, then install the latest driver from the manufacturer for that exact model.
  • Roblox stuck in compatibility mode. If you get an "out of date graphics" message on a machine that clearly passes the specs, right-click the Roblox application, open Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and make sure "Run this program in compatibility mode" is unchecked.
  • A settings file gone wrong. The support article's reset path is Roblox Studio, File, Settings, then the Reset All Settings button in the lower-left of the dialog.
  • The experience itself. This one is not fixable from your side. In the same August 2026 laptop thread, commenters with the same CPU report the same collapse in the same game and shrug: how well an experience runs depends on the developer who built it. Before you rebuild your PC, load a simple baseline place and see whether your frame rate is fine there.

Phones and tablets are a different problem

Roblox's mobile requirements page is short and strict: iOS or iPadOS 14 or higher, Android 8.0 or higher with at least OpenGL ES 3.0 support, and a named list of minimum Amazon Fire tablets. Nothing about frame rate, because there is no player-facing frame cap setting there — the 2024 Maximum Framerate announcement limited it to Windows with Mac promised later, and says nothing about phones.

What you do control on mobile is the same graphics slider, in the same Esc menu, and the same rule about the experience you are playing. If a game runs at half speed on a phone that handles everything else, the graphics slider is your only real lever, and after that it is the device.

Myths worth dropping

"An FPS unlocker will fix my lag." It never did. The clearest version of this came from a player in an older DevForum thread on the same subject: an unlocker does not fix lag, it lifts the cap from 60, so unless you are already hitting 60 you will see no improvement. Since 2024 the client has its own frame rate setting anyway, which removes the only reason the tools existed. What has not gone away is the download risk — one player in an August 2026 thread describes their account being stolen after installing a launcher, and only two-step verification saving it.

"Max graphics gives better draw distance, so I have to choose between distance and frames." You do have to choose, but not because of a bug — the client exposes one slider, not separate distance and quality controls. Complaining about it is fair; searching for a hidden setting is a waste of an evening.

"More RAM means more FPS." Roblox's own minimum is 1 GB. If you already have 8 or 16 GB, the next stick will not raise your frame rate; a CPU that struggles with a physics-heavy experience will keep struggling.

"Boosters and cleaners." Nothing on the official troubleshooting path involves a third-party optimiser. Roblox's list is: graphics level, background apps, drivers, and a better device if it still stutters.

Once the frame rate is fixed

A stable frame rate mostly changes how inputs feel, and Roblox is full of experiences where inputs are the whole game. If you play clickers or simulators, the CPS test gives you a real number for your click rate instead of a guess. If you are in a first-person shooter experience, the mouse polling rate test tells you whether your mouse actually reports at 1000 Hz or is quietly sitting at 125, and the reaction time test gives you a baseline to compare before and after you raise the frame cap — going from 60 to 144 FPS shortens the time between something happening and you seeing it, and that shows up here. If a key seems to stick or repeat in an obby, the keyboard tester will show whether the hardware or the game is at fault.

FAQ

How do I get more than 60 FPS in Roblox?

You do not need anything external. Roblox added a Maximum Framerate setting for Windows in May 2024 specifically to remove the 60 Hz render lock, and a Roblox staff reply in 2026 confirms the setting supports up to 240 FPS, with anything above that not officially supported. Open the in-experience menu with Esc, go to Settings, and raise the frame rate value.

What graphics level should I use in Roblox?

Whatever your device holds without stutter, set manually. Roblox's own instructions are to switch Graphics Mode from Automatic to Manual and move the Graphics Quality slider left for performance or right for looks. Automatic mode lets the device decide, which is why your quality sometimes changes between experiences without you touching anything.

Are FPS unlockers still needed for Roblox?

No. The reason they existed — a hard 60 Hz cap on the PC client — was removed by the built-in Maximum Framerate setting in 2024. What remains is the risk: a player in an August 2026 r/RobloxHelp thread describes downloading a launcher and having their account stolen, saving it only because two-step verification was on.

How do I see my FPS in Roblox?

Press Shift+F5 in the client for the debug stats summary, which includes the frame rate. Shift+F3 shows network debug stats including ping, and F9 opens the developer console with memory, network and script performance. These are documented in Roblox's own creator documentation and work in the normal client.

Why is my FPS bad in one Roblox game but fine in another?

Because each experience is built by a different developer, and how it is built decides the load on your device far more than your graphics slider does. Roblox's support article splits the problem into network lag, graphics lag and system lag; a heavy experience is a fourth category none of your settings fully solve.
