Type your text and press the button. It comes back mirrored — reversed left to right, with letters swapped for their mirror-image shapes where such a character exists, so it reads as if held up to a mirror.

Three different "backwards" — and they are not the same

People say "backwards text" for three distinct effects, and mixing them up is why the result is often not what was wanted.

• Mirror (this button) — a horizontal flip, like reflection in a mirror. The order reverses and the letter shapes flip, so b becomes d. This is "mirror writing", the Leonardo da Vinci effect.
• Reverse — the character order is reversed but the letters keep their normal shape: "hello" becomes "olleh". The letters still face the right way. Our reverse text tool does this and more.
• Upside down — a vertical flip, so text appears rotated 180 degrees using turned characters. Different again, and on this page as a button.

If you flipped when you meant to reverse, or the other way, that is the fix — try the neighbouring button.

How the mirroring works

Mirror writing uses Unicode characters whose shapes are the horizontal reflections of ordinary letters, plus the reversed order. Not every letter has a true mirror twin in Unicode — some are symmetrical already (A, H, M, o, v, w, x) and stay as they are, and a few have no good match and are left alone. Brackets and comparison signs flip to their mirror partners, so ( becomes ) and < becomes >. The result is plain Unicode text you can copy and paste anywhere that accepts it.

What it is for

• Iron-on transfers and heat prints. Designs pressed onto fabric must be mirrored so they read correctly after transfer — the number one practical use.
• Social bios and usernames that want an eye-catching, unusual look.
• Puzzles and games where text has to be decoded by holding it to a mirror.
• Art and design using mirror writing as an effect.
• Curiosity — reading your own name the way da Vinci wrote his notes.

Where it will not paste

Because it relies on special Unicode characters, some places that restrict which characters they accept — certain form fields, official name entries, some banking systems — will reject or blank them. That is a limitation of those systems, not the text, and there is no way around it there. In ordinary social apps, documents and messages it works fine.

Doing it without this tool

Word for printing: put text in a text box, then Format → Rotate → Flip Horizontal. This mirrors it visually for printing, which is what iron-on transfers actually need, but you cannot copy the mirrored text out as characters.

Image editors: flip the layer horizontally — again visual, not copyable text.

By hand: genuinely impractical, which is the whole reason a converter exists.

How to use it

1. Type or paste your text into the box.
2. Press "Mirror the text" for a true horizontal flip.
3. If you wanted the letters to keep their shape, press "Reverse character order" instead.
4. Copy the result. For an iron-on transfer, this is the version to print.
